### Lesson Plan: Weather and Seasons
**Subject**: Science
**Grade**: 1st Grade
**Duration**: 1 hour
**Topic**: Weather and Seasons
#### Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify the four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter.
2. Describe the typical weather patterns associated with each season.
3. Recognize the importance of appropriate clothing and activities for different seasons.
#### Materials:
- Pictures of the four seasons
- Weather symbols (sun, clouds, raindrops, snowflakes)
- Construction paper, crayons, or markers
- Seasonal clothing and activity cutouts (optional: you can print these from templates or create simple drawings)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Storybook related to weather or seasons (suggested title: "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle)
- Seasonal weather video (if available)
#### Introduction (10 minutes):
1. **Greeting and Warm-Up**: Begin with a friendly greeting. Ask students if they noticed what the weather was like when they came to school. Was it sunny, cloudy, or rainy?
2. **Explain the Objective**: Tell students that today they are going to learn about the different kinds of weather we see during each of the four seasons.
#### Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
1. **Introduction to Seasons**: Show pictures of the four seasons. As you show each picture, ask students if they recognize what season it is.
2. **Discussion of Weather Patterns**:
- **Spring**: Birds chirp, flowers bloom, it often rains.
- **Summer**: It is hot, and sunny, people go to the beach.
- **Fall**: Leaves change color and fall, it gets cooler.
- **Winter**: It is cold, it might snow, days are shorter.
3. **Weather Symbols**: Introduce basic weather symbols (sun, clouds, raindrops, snowflakes). Display these on the whiteboard.
#### Guided Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Storytime**: Read aloud "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle (a story about the life cycle of a seed, through the seasons). Pause periodically to discuss the weather depicted in the story and which season it belongs to.
2. **Discussion**: After the story, ask students to recall and describe the weather in each part of the book.
#### Independent Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Seasonal Collage Creation**: Provide each student with a sheet of construction paper divided into four sections, one for each season.
2. **Drawing and Coloring**: Allow students to draw weather symbols, trees, and activities suitable for each season in the corresponding section.
- Optional: Use seasonal clothing and activity cutouts for students to glue on their collages.
#### Closing (5 minutes):
1. **Review and Share**: Ask students to share one thing they learned about weather or seasons. Encourage a few students to show their collages.
2. **Weather Song**: Teach a simple song about the seasons and weather, such as “The Seasons Song” or “What’s the Weather Like Today?”
#### Assessment:
- Observe students’ participation in discussions and activities.
- Review the seasonal collages to ensure students included correct weather patterns and activities for each season.
#### Extension Activities:
- **Weather Chart**: Create a classroom weather chart to track the daily weather for a month.
- **Dress-Up Day**: Plan a day for students to wear clothes suitable for their favorite season and explain why they picked that season.
This lesson plan aims to make learning about weather and seasons engaging and interactive, catering to the young minds of 1st graders.
