### Lesson Plan: Living and Non-living Things II
**Subject**: Basic Science and Technology
**Grade Level**: Junior Secondary 1 (JSS 1)
**Duration**: 60 minutes
**Topic**: Living and Non-Living Things II
---
#### **Objectives:**
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Differentiate between living and non-living things.
2. Understand the characteristics of living things.
3. Identify examples of living and non-living things.
4. Appreciate the importance of living and non-living things in our environment.
---
#### **Materials Needed:**
- Whiteboard and markers
- Projector and laptop (optional)
- Chart paper
- Flashcards with pictures of living and non-living things
- Science textbooks
- Handouts with worksheet activities
- Some real-life examples of both living and non-living things (e.g., plants, rocks, insects)
---
#### **Lesson Outline:**
**1. Introduction (10 minutes)**
   - Begin with a quick recap of the previous lesson on ‘Living and Non-Living Things’.
   - Use flashcards to show pictures of living and non-living things. Ask students to identify and classify them.
   - Highlight the objectives of today’s lesson.
**2. Interactive Discussion (20 minutes)**
   - Discuss the main characteristics of living things: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition (use the acronym MRS GREN).
   - Write these characteristics on the whiteboard and explain each with examples. For instance, plants grow, animals breathe, humans excrete waste, microbes reproduce, etc.
   - Discuss non-living things and their lack of these characteristics.
**3. Group Activity (15 minutes)**
   - Divide students into small groups.
   - Give each group a chart paper and some markers.
   - Assign each group the task of listing out examples of living and non-living things found in their immediate environment (home, school, community).
   - After listing, each group should categorize the examples and discuss within the group why they classified an item as living or non-living.
**4. Presentation & Discussion (10 minutes)**
   - Have each group present their chart and briefly explain their lists and categorizations.
   - Encourage other students to ask questions or provide additional examples.
**5. Individual Activity (Worksheet) (5 minutes)**
   - Distribute the handout with a worksheet that contains pictures and descriptions.
   - Students need to circle or tick the pictures/descriptions of living things and cross or ignore the non-living things.
**6. Conclusion (5 minutes)**
   - Summarize the key points of the lesson.
   - Reinforce the importance of both living and non-living things in our ecosystem.
   - Assign homework where students need to write five sentences explaining the importance of living things in maintaining the balance in the environment or an account of a simple biological interaction (like a food chain involving living and non-living things).
---
#### **Assessment:**
- **Formative**: Monitor students’ participation during group activity and presentations.
- **Summative**: Evaluate the worksheet activity and the homework assignment.
---
#### **Homework:**
Write five sentences explaining the importance of living things in maintaining the balance in the environment or an account of a simple biological interaction (like a food chain involving living and non-living things).
---
#### **Additional Notes:**
- Encourage students to bring any interesting living and non-living things they find for the next class.
- Adapt the pace of the lesson as needed based on student understanding and engagement.
---
This lesson plan aims to make the topic interactive, engaging, and informative, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the differences between living and non-living things and their respective importance.
