In our daily lives in Ghana, we are always comparing things. When we share FanYogo with a friend, we want to know if we have the same amount. When we buy groundnuts, we look to see which seller gives us more for our money. This lesson introduces our young learners to the fundamental mathematical concepts of "more," "less," and "same as." Understanding these ideas helps children make sense of the world around them and builds a strong foundation for future learning in addition and subtraction. We will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and seeds to make learning fun and practical.
This lesson focuses on three key comparison words: More, Less, and Same As. Before we compare, we must first be sure we can count properly.
Concept 1: Review of Counting (One-to-one Correspondence) Explanation: When we count, we must touch each object only once and say one number name for each object. This is how we find out "how many" are in a group. Example: Let's count these bottle caps. (Teacher places 5 bottle caps on the table). "Let's count together. Touch the first one and say 'one'. Touch the second one and say 'two'. Touch the third one, 'three'. Touch the fourth one, 'four'. Touch the fifth one, 'five'." "So, how many bottle caps do we have? We have five!"
Concept 2: Understanding "More" Explanation: "More" means a bigger amount or a larger number. When we compare two groups, the group with the bigger number has more.
