This lesson is designed to help our young learners develop control over their bodies and make smart choices about what they eat. In Ghana, children love to play outside—running, jumping, and chasing friends in the compound or on the school field. By learning to move safely, they can enjoy their games without getting hurt or hurting others. We will also learn about the wonderful Ghanaian foods that give us the energy to play and help our bodies grow strong and healthy, like yam, plantain, and fresh fish. This knowledge is the first step towards a long, active, and healthy life.
This lesson covers two main areas: how we move our bodies (Gross Motor Skills) and what we eat to fuel our bodies (Health & Safety).
Concept 1: Locomotor Movements (Moving Our Bodies)
Locomotor movements are the ways we move our whole body from one place to another. For KG1, we focus on fun, foundational movements. Hopping: This is moving up and down on one foot. The other foot is held up in the air. Example: "Remember how you stand on one foot when you are about to play *ampe*? That is hopping! You push off the ground with one foot and land on the same foot. Hop, hop, hop!" Jumping: This is pushing off the ground with both feet at the same time and landing on both feet at the same time. Example: "Pretend you are a frog sitting by the water. A frog gets ready and JUMPS! Both feet leave the ground together and land together. Bend your knees a little when you land to be safe." Galloping: This is a forward movement where one foot is always in front of the other. It feels like a horse ride. Step-by-step: Step forward with one foot (let's say your right foot). Bring your other foot (your left foot) up to meet it. Quickly step forward with the front foot (right foot) again. It makes a rhythm: "Step-together, step-together, step-together." It's like a jump-skip.
Concept 2: Spatial Awareness (Playing Safely)
