This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of subtraction, which we will call "taking away." Understanding "taking away" is a vital life skill. In our daily lives in Ghana, we use it all the time without even thinking: when we share our lunch with a friend, when we spend some of our pocket money at the school canteen, or when we see birds fly away from a tree. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and our own fingers to make the idea of "taking away" fun, practical, and easy to understand. We will focus on numbers up to 5 to build a strong and confident foundation.
Concept 1: What is "Taking Away" (Subtraction)?
"Taking away" is a simple but powerful idea. It means starting with a group of things and then removing some of them. When we take some things away, the group becomes smaller. We are interested in finding out "how many are left?"
Key Vocabulary: Take Away: To remove something from a group. Left: The number of things remaining after some have been taken away. Subtract: Another word for "take away." Less: The new group has *less* than the starting group.
