Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on a very important life skill: proper handwashing. In Ghana, our children love to play outside, touch many things, and eat delicious meals with their hands. Learning how to wash their hands correctly helps them wash away tiny, invisible germs that can cause common illnesses like diarrhoea ('running stomach') or a cough and catarrh. By mastering this skill, our learners can stay healthy, strong, and ready to learn and play every day. This lesson empowers them to take care of their own health.

Lesson notes

This lesson is built around two main concepts: understanding "germs" in a simple way and mastering the steps of effective handwashing. Concept 1: What are Germs?

Explain to the children in very simple terms. "Today, we are going to learn about tiny, tiny things called germs. We cannot see them with our eyes because they are invisible, like magic! Some germs are good, but some are bad guys that can get on our hands when we play in the sand, touch door handles, or sneeze. If these bad germs get inside our bodies when we eat or touch our faces, they can make us feel sick with a tummy ache or a cough. But we have a superpower to fight them: soap and water!"

Key vocabulary: Germs: Tiny, invisible things that can make us sick. Soap: Our special weapon to fight germs. Healthy: When our body feels strong and happy. Sick: When our body feels weak or has pain. Concept 2: The 5 Steps of Super Handwashing
