This lesson focuses on two fundamental gross motor skills: hopping and jumping. These movements are not only fun but are also essential for developing balance, coordination, and leg strength. In Ghana, these skills are part of our everyday play, from games like "ampe" to jumping over puddles after the rain. By mastering hopping and jumping in a safe and structured way, our young learners build physical confidence and a foundation for more complex movements in sports, dance, and daily life.
This lesson introduces two key movements. It is important to explain and demonstrate them clearly.
Concept 1: Hopping Explanation: Hopping is when we stand on one foot and spring up and down. The other foot is lifted off the ground. It is like being a bird standing on one leg! Hopping helps us to become very good at balancing. Step-by-step Demonstration (for the teacher to model): "Everyone, watch Teacher. I will stand up straight." "Now, I will lift one of my legs. Let's lift our left leg. See? It's in the air like an airplane wing." "The other leg, my right leg, is strong on the ground. This is my 'hopping leg'." "Now, I will bend my hopping leg a little bit and... PUSH! I go up and come down on the same foot." (Demonstrate a small hop). "Let's do it three times together on this leg. Ready? One... two... three!" (Repeat the entire process for the other leg).
Concept 2: Jumping Explanation: Jumping is when we use both of our feet to push off the ground and land. We are like a frog getting ready to leap! Jumping makes our legs very strong. Step-by-step Demonstration (for the teacher to model): "Now for jumping! For this, we need both our feet on the ground, side-by-side, like friends." "Stand with your feet a little bit apart." "Now, bend your knees. Let's get ready to spring up!" "Swing your arms back and then forward as you push with BOTH feet. JUMP!" (Demonstrate a jump in place). "When we land, we must be safe. We land on both feet and bend our knees again to be soft. No stiff legs!" (Demonstrate a soft landing).
Key Difference (Hopping vs. Jumping): Use a simple chant to help them remember: "One foot, one foot, that's a hop, hop, hop!" (While hopping) "Two feet, two feet, that's a jump, jump, jump!" (While jumping)
