Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the crucial concept of safety in their immediate environments—the home and the school. In Ghana, homes and schools are filled with objects and situations that can be wonderful for learning and playing, but some can also be harmful if not handled correctly. By learning to identify potential dangers and understanding simple safety rules, our children can develop the confidence and awareness needed to protect themselves from common accidents like burns, cuts, and poisoning. This foundational knowledge empowers them to be active participants in their own well-being.

Lesson notes

This lesson is best taught through stories, songs, pictures, and role-playing. The concepts should be explained in very simple, direct language.

Core Vocabulary: Safe: When you are protected and cannot get hurt. Feeling happy and well. Danger: Something that can hurt you or make you sick. Grown-up: A big person you trust, like Mummy, Daddy, Teacher, Uncle, or Aunty.

Concept 1: What is Safety? Explanation: Teacher, start by asking the children, "How do you feel when you are playing happily with your friends and nobody gets hurt? You feel good, right? That feeling is called being safe." Safety is like having a protective shield around you. When we are safe, we can learn, play, and grow without getting an 'ouchie'.

Concept 2: Identifying Dangers at Home Explain that our homes are lovely, but some things are for grown-ups only because they can be dangerous for children. Danger A: FIRE / HOT THINGS Explanation: "Fire is beautiful to look at, but it is very, very hot! It can burn our skin and say 'ouch!' Things like the fire on the gas cooker, a lit candle, a coal pot, or a box of matches are all very hot and dangerous for children." Example: Show a picture of a gas cooker with flames. "Do we touch this? No! Why? Because it is hot! It is a danger." Show an unlit matchbox. "Even this small box is not a toy. It can make fire. It is a danger." Safety Rule: "Stay away from fire. Never play with matches." Danger B: SHARP THINGS Explanation: "Some things in the house can cut our skin. They are very sharp." Example: Show pictures or safe, toy versions of a knife, scissors, a razor blade, and a broken bottle. "Mama uses a knife to cut onions. It helps her, but for a child, it is sharp and can cut you. It is a danger." Safety Rule: "Do not touch sharp things. If you need something cut, ask a grown-up for help." Danger C: ELECTRICITY Explanation: "Electricity gives us light and makes the television work. It travels through wires and comes out of small holes in the wall called sockets. But electricity is very strong and can give you a big shock!" Example: Point to an electrical socket in the classroom. "See these small holes? They are not for fingers. They are not for pencils. Putting anything inside is a big danger." Safety Rule: "Never put your fingers or toys in electrical sockets." Danger D: POISON / CHEMICALS Explanation: "Some bottles in the house have things inside that look like drinks, but they are not. They are medicine or cleaning liquids like 'Parazone' or soap. If you drink them, they can make you very, very sick in your tummy." Example: Show an empty, clean bottle of a common cleaning product (ensure it's clean and safe to handle). "This is not for drinking. It is a danger. Medicine is also only given to you by a grown-up. You must never take it by yourself." Safety Rule: "Never eat or drink anything unless a grown-up gives it to you."
