This week, we are continuing our exciting journey with numbers! Numbers are all around us. We use them to know how many brothers and sisters we have, how many biscuits we can eat, or how many players are on our ampe team. By learning to count objects accurately, we can understand our world better. This week, we will become experts on the numbers six (6) and seven (7), building on our knowledge of numbers 1 to 5.
This lesson focuses on two main ideas for counting: one-to-one correspondence and cardinality, and one idea for writing numbers: numeral recognition.
Concept 1: One-to-One Correspondence (The "Touch and Count" Rule) This is the most important rule for counting things correctly. It means you say only ONE number for EACH object you touch. You cannot skip any object, and you cannot count any object more than once. How to Explain to a Child: "My friends, when we count, we must be very fair! We give each thing its own number. We touch it gently and say its number. Watch me." Teacher's Demonstration: Place 6 bottle caps on a table. Say, "Let's count these bottle caps. I will touch each one as I say a number." Slowly touch the first cap and say, "One." Touch the second cap and say, "Two." Continue this way: "Three... Four... Five... Six." "I touched every single one, and I didn't miss any. That's how we count!"
Concept 2: Cardinality (The "Last Number is the Boss" Rule) This rule tells us that the last number we say when we finish counting a group of objects tells us the total number of items in that group. How to Explain to a Child: "The last number you say is the most important! It's the boss! It tells you how many things there are altogether."
