This lesson focuses on developing fundamental gross motor skills: hopping, jumping, and galloping. These movements are not just for play; they are the building blocks for more complex physical activities like running, dancing, and playing sports. In our Ghanaian context, these skills are seen everywhere, from children playing *ampe* in the compound to traditional dances performed at festivals. By mastering these skills, our learners improve their balance, coordination, and physical strength, leading to a healthier and more active life. This lesson will be conducted through fun, engaging games and activities.
This lesson is highly practical. Before we start the activities, it is important to explain and demonstrate each movement clearly to the children.
Concept 1: Hopping (Moving on ONE foot) Explanation: "Hopping is when we move up and down on only one foot, like a little bird looking for a worm. We lift one foot up and keep it in the air, while the other foot does all the work of pushing us off the ground. Boing, boing, boing!" Demonstration: Stand straight and tall. "Let's lift one leg up. Let's pretend it's sleeping." "Now, let's bend the knee of the leg that is on the ground." "And PUSH off the ground! Hop, hop, hop." "Let's try with the other leg now. This leg sleeps, and this one hops!"
Concept 2: Jumping (Moving on TWO feet) Explanation: "Jumping is when we use both of our feet together to push off the ground. We are like a frog jumping from one lily pad to another. We bend our knees to get power and land on both feet to be safe." Demonstration: "Stand with your two feet close together, like you have glued them." "Bend your knees down low like you are sitting on a small stool." "Swing your arms back, and then swing them forward as you JUMP!" "Land on both feet with your knees bent a little bit. This keeps us from falling."
Concept 3: Galloping (Moving like a horse) Explanation: "Galloping is a fun way to move forward. It's like one foot is chasing the other. It goes step-hop, step-hop. We can pretend we are riding a horse to Makola Market!" Demonstration: "Put one foot forward. This is our leader foot." "Now, bring your other foot up to meet it. This is the follower." "The movement is: step forward with the leader, then a little hop as the follower comes to meet it. Step-together, step-together." It has a rhythm, like music. We can clap it out: *clap*... *clap*... *clap*.
