This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of addition by physically combining, or "putting together," two small groups of objects. This skill is vital for everyday life in Ghana. We use it when we buy items at the market (e.g., buying 2 oranges and then 1 more), when we share snacks with friends, or when we count family members in a room. By learning to combine groups, children begin to understand that numbers can change and grow, which is the first step towards addition and more complex mathematics. The lesson will be play-based, using familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and picture cards.
The core idea for today is combining sets. This means we take two small groups of things and put them together to make one bigger group. Then, we count everything in the new big group to find out the total, or how many altogether.
Key Vocabulary: Group / Set: A collection of things (e.g., a group of 3 stones). Combine / Put together / Join: The action of mixing two groups. Altogether / Total: The final number you get after counting everything. "And... makes...": The simple sentence we use to talk about combining. For example, "3 stones and 1 stone makes 4 stones."
