Performance objectives

Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on developing fundamental gross motor skills: jumping, hopping, and skipping. These are not just forms of play; they are the building blocks for more complex physical activities. In our Ghanaian communities, we see these movements everywhere – from children playing games like 'Ampe' in the compound to energetic dancing at festivals. By mastering these skills, learners build strength, balance, and coordination, which boosts their physical confidence and keeps their bodies healthy and strong. This lesson is designed to be fun, active, and engaging, using games and activities that children naturally enjoy.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on three key locomotor movements. It is important to break them down simply for the learners and to demonstrate them clearly.

Safety First: Before starting any activity, ensure the space is clear of obstacles (chairs, bags, stones). Activities are best done outdoors on grass or in a spacious hall.

Concept 1: Jumping Explanation: Jumping is when you push off the ground with both feet at the same time and land on both feet at the same time. It's a powerful movement that uses our leg muscles. How to Teach It (Step-by-step): "Get Ready": Tell the children to stand with their feet a little bit apart. "Bend Your Knees": Show them how to bend their knees like they are about to sit on a small stool. "We are getting the power in our legs!" "Swing Your Arms": Swing arms back and then forward as you jump to help you go higher. "JUMP!": Push off hard with both feet. "Land Softly": Land on both feet with knees bent to absorb the shock. This is important for safety. Ghanaian Context Example: "Let's jump like a frog! Do you know the sound a frog (kankee) makes? Let's make that sound as we jump! Ribbit! Ribbit!" or "Jump over the gutter like you're crossing a small stream."

Concept 2: Hopping Explanation: Hopping is when you stand on one foot, jump up, and land on the same foot. It requires good balance. How to Teach It (Step-by-step): "Choose a Foot": Tell the children to stand straight and lift one foot off the ground. They can hold it behind or in front of them. "Find Your Balance": Let them practice just standing on one foot first. They can put their arms out to the side like airplane wings to help them balance. "Small Hops": Encourage them to do a tiny jump on their standing foot. "Hop, hop, hop!" "Switch Feet": After a few hops, have them switch and try hopping on the other foot. Ghanaian Context Example: "We are going to practice the 'Ampe' hop! When you play Ampe with your friends, you hop on one foot and clap your hands. Let's try it!"
