Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the very important number "zero" (0). While we have learned to count things we can see (like 1 goat, 2 mangoes, 5 fingers), this week we will learn how to name and write the number for "nothing" or "empty". Understanding zero is a foundational step in mathematics. In our daily lives in Ghana, we often see things finish – a bowl of fufu becomes empty, all the water is fetched from the bucket, or a seller at the market sells all her oranges. The number we use to describe these "empty" or "finished" situations is zero. We will also practise our counting and recognition of numbers 1 to 5 to make sure we remember them well.

Lesson notes

This lesson is designed to be interactive and play-based. The concepts should be introduced through activities, not just lectures.

Key Concept 1: Review of Counting 1 to 5

Before introducing zero, it's vital to refresh the numbers the children already know. One-to-One Correspondence: This is the most important counting skill. It means touching one object for each number name you say. Teacher's Explanation: "My dear ones, let's remember how we count. When we count our bottle caps, we touch each one and say its number. We don't rush! Let's try. (Place 5 bottle caps in a row). One... (touch the first one). Two... (touch the second one). Three... (touch the third). Four... (touch the fourth). Five... (touch the fifth). We have five bottle caps!" Cardinality: This means the last number you say when counting a group tells you how many things are in that group. Teacher's Explanation: "Because the last number we said was 'five', it tells us there are five bottle caps altogether. Five!"

Key Concept 2: The Meaning of Zero (0)
