Lesson summary

This week, we will learn all about the number five! The number five is a very important number we see and use every day in Ghana. We have five fingers on one hand to wave "hello," and five toes on one foot to help us run and play. When we go to the market with our parents, we might buy five tomatoes or five mangoes. Learning to count up to five helps us understand our world, share things fairly with our friends, and get ready for bigger numbers. This lesson will be fun, using songs, games, and objects from our classroom and environment.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on three main ideas about the number five: its name ("five"), its quantity (how many it is), and its symbol ('5').

Concept 1: What is Counting? (One-to-one Correspondence) Counting is not just saying numbers in order. It means matching one number name to one object at a time. We touch each object only once as we say a number. The last number we say tells us how many objects are in the whole group.

Teacher's Demonstration: Place 5 bottle caps on the table. Say, "Let's count these bottle caps. Watch me carefully. I will touch each one as I say a number." Touch the first cap: "One." Touch the second cap: "Two." Touch the third cap: "Three." Touch the fourth cap: "Four." Touch the fifth cap: "Five." Sweep your hand over the whole group and say, "There are five bottle caps. The last number I said was five, so that is how many we have."

Concept 2: The Quantity and Name "Five" "Five" is the word we use to describe a group of this many things: 🖐️ (Five fingers) 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅 (Five tomatoes) 📘📘📘📘📘 (Five books)
