This week, we are going on a special number adventure to meet our new friend, the number three! Knowing our numbers is very important. It helps us count our favourite biscuits, share toys with our friends, and even count the beautiful colours in our Ghana flag. The number three is all around us – from the three stones we use to support a cooking pot to the three meals we eat each day. This lesson will help us see, count, and write the number three in a fun and exciting way.
This lesson focuses on three main ideas about the number 3: a) The quantity or "three-ness" (what a group of three looks like). b) The numeral '3' (the symbol we write). c) How to form the numeral '3'. Concept 1: Understanding the Quantity of Three
"Three" is the word we use when we have a group of items that is one more than two. It's a specific amount.
Explanation (Teacher's Script): "Good morning, my wonderful children! Today, we are learning about a new number. Let's count my fingers. One... two... what comes next? Yes, three! Look here." (Show three fingers). "This is three fingers. Now let's find other things that are three." Step 1: Concrete Counting. Gather learners in a circle. Place three stones on the floor. Touch each stone as you count aloud slowly and clearly: "One... two... three. We have three stones." Step 2: Counting with Learners. Give three bottle caps to a small group. "Adwoa, let's count your bottle caps together. Touch each one. One... two... three. How many do you have? Three! Very good!" Step 3: Rhyme and Action. Use a simple rhyme to reinforce the concept: > "One, two, three, (Clap on each number) > Come and count with me! (Beckon with hands) > One, two, three, (Stamp feet on each number) > A busy, busy bee!" (Wiggle fingers like a bee) Concept 2: Identifying the Numeral '3'
The numeral is the symbol we write down to show the number. The numeral for three looks like this: 3.
