Lesson summary

This week's lessons introduce the foundational concepts of numbers 1 and 2. Understanding numbers is the very beginning of a child's mathematical journey. In our daily lives in Ghana, we use numbers constantly – to count money for kenkey, to share sweets with friends, or to know how many brothers and sisters we have. This lesson will use familiar objects, songs, and games to make learning the numbers one and two fun and meaningful for our young learners. The focus is on counting, recognizing the numeral, and understanding the quantity each number represents.

Lesson notes

This week is broken down into three main lesson focuses: Lesson 1: The Number One, Lesson 2: The Number Two, and Lesson 3: Combining One and Two. Lesson 1: The Number One (1)

Concept 1: What is "One"? "One" is the first counting number. It means a single item, all by itself. We use it to talk about a single person or a single thing. Teacher's Explanation: "Class, look at me. I have one head. You have one nose. This is one chalk. 'One' means there is only a single one of it. Let's say it together: one."

Concept 2: Recognizing the Numeral '1' The symbol we write for "one" is '1'. It looks like a straight stick. Teacher's Explanation: "This is how we write the number one. It is a straight line down. From the top, we go straight down. It is very easy!" (Teacher demonstrates on the board).

Concept 3: Counting One Object To count one object, we touch it and say "one". That's all! The last number we say tells us how many there are. Example: Teacher holds up a mango. "Let's count this mango. Ready? (Touches the mango) One." "How many mangoes do I have?" (Learners respond: "One!") "Excellent! There is one mango."
