This week, we are learning a very important skill called sorting. Sorting is something we do every day in Ghana. When we go to the market, we see sellers putting all the red tomatoes in one pile and the garden eggs in another. At home, we put our clean spoons with other spoons and our cups with other cups. Sorting simply means putting things that are the same together in groups. This helps us to be neat, organized, and to understand our world better. By learning to sort, we are building the foundation for counting and understanding numbers.
The main ideas for this week are sorting and attributes. We will explore these concepts using simple, hands-on activities. Concept 1: What is Sorting?
Sorting means "to put things that are alike together". We look at a mixed group of items and we create smaller groups where everything in a group has something in common. Teacher's Simple Explanation: "Hello children! Today, we are going to be detectives! Our job is to find things that are friends and put them together. Friends are things that are the same in some way. When we put them in their own groups, we call it sorting. It's like putting all the goats in one pen and all the chickens in another." Concept 2: What is an Attribute? (The "Rule" for Sorting)
An "attribute" is a word we use to describe something. It tells us how an object looks or feels. For KG1, we won't use the word "attribute" much, but we will focus on the *idea* of it by asking questions. Teacher's Simple Explanation: "How do we know which things are friends? We look for a clue! This clue is how they are the same. Maybe they have the same colour. Maybe they are the same size (big or small). Maybe they are the same type of thing (all stones, or all leaves)."
