Lesson summary

This week in Life Skills, we're revisiting what we learned earlier. Revising and consolidating our knowledge helps us remember important things and use them in our everyday lives. For our Grade R learners in South Africa, these skills are essential for growing into responsible, healthy, and happy individuals who can contribute positively to their communities. We'll be focusing on personal hygiene, healthy eating, and recognising our emotions. These three areas are interconnected and fundamental to a child's overall well-being.

Lesson notes

Personal Hygiene: Handwashing Handwashing is one of the most important things we can do to stay healthy. Germs are tiny creatures that can make us sick. They are everywhere – on our toys, our food, and even on our hands! Washing our hands with soap and water removes these germs.

Why it's important: In South Africa, many illnesses spread quickly, especially in crowded areas or where water is scarce. Handwashing can significantly reduce the risk of getting sick and spreading germs to others, protecting ourselves and our families. It's crucial after playing outside, using the toilet, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.

How to wash your hands properly: Wet your hands with clean water. Apply soap. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds. Sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice to make sure you wash for long enough! Make sure to scrub all parts of your hands, including between your fingers and under your nails. Rinse your hands thoroughly with clean water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.
