Overview This week's lessons are dedicated to revising and strengthening the foundational mathematical concepts that Grade R learners have been introduced to. The focus is on making mathematics a tangible, exciting, and relevant part of their daily lives. We will consolidate their understanding of numbers up to 5, basic 2D shapes, and simple patterns. In the South African context, these skills are crucial for everyday interactions, from counting money at the spaza shop to recognising shapes in our homes and appreciating the beautiful patterns in traditional beadwork or shweshwe fabric.
This section provides the core knowledge for the teacher to deliver. Use concrete objects (bottle caps, blocks, beads, stones) and pictures throughout these explanations.
A. Number Sense: Counting and Recognising Numbers 1-5 What is Counting? Counting is how we find out 'how many' there are of something. We use special words called numbers.
Rote Counting: This is like singing a number song. We say the numbers in the right order without stopping.
Let's practice: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!" The order is very important.
One-to-one Correspondence: This is the most important part of counting objects! It means we give one number name to one object. We touch each object only once as we say its number. This stops us from counting too fast and getting the wrong answer.
