This week, we are going to revisit and reinforce what we learned in Life Skills last week. Life Skills helps us understand ourselves, our feelings, and how to get along with others. It also teaches us important things like safety and taking care of our bodies. Knowing these things helps us be happy, healthy, and safe, which are all very important for every South African child to grow up strong and be a good citizen. We will review how we express our feelings and how we can be good friends. We'll also talk about keeping ourselves clean and healthy.
Feelings: Feelings are how we experience things inside. They can be happy feelings like joy and excitement, or sad feelings like disappointment and loneliness, or even angry feelings when things are unfair. It’s important to know what we are feeling, and it is okay to feel all sorts of feelings.
Example 1: Let's say Sipho gets a new toy. He might feel happy and excited!
Example 2: If Thandi wanted to play with her friend, but her friend was busy, she might feel sad or disappointed.
Example 3: If Musa's building block tower falls down, he might feel angry or frustrated. We can show our feelings in different ways. We might smile when we are happy, or frown when we are sad. Talking about our feelings can help us feel better. For example, if Lindiwe is feeling sad because she fell and scraped her knee, she can tell her teacher, and her teacher can help her feel better.
Friendship: Friendship is about having people in our lives who care about us and who we care about. Good friends are kind, helpful, and respectful. They share, play together nicely, and listen to each other.
Example 1: Sharing toys with a friend shows kindness. If Amahle lets Zola play with her doll, it shows she is a good friend.
Example 2: Helping a friend who is struggling. If Bongani sees Khumo struggling to tie his shoelaces, Bongani can help him.
Example 3: Listening when a friend is talking. When Phumi tells Neo about her day, Neo listens carefully and asks questions. Remember, being a good friend means being respectful, sharing, and helping each other. It's also important to remember that friends don't hurt each other on purpose.
Hygiene: Hygiene is all about keeping our bodies clean to stay healthy and prevent germs from spreading.
Example 1: Washing our hands with soap and water after playing outside helps remove germs. Imagine you are playing in the sand in Durban. After playing, you must wash your hands before eating your lunch.
Example 2: Brushing our teeth twice a day keeps our teeth healthy and prevents cavities. After eating pap and vleis, you should brush your teeth to remove any food stuck in them.
Example 3: Bathing or showering regularly keeps our bodies clean. After a long day of playing soccer in Soweto, you should take a bath or shower. Remember, good hygiene helps us stay healthy and prevents us from getting sick.
Safety: Safety means taking steps to protect ourselves from danger.
Example 1: Looking both ways before crossing the road is a very important safety rule. Always remember to look left, then right, and then left again before crossing the street.
Example 2: Holding an adult's hand when crossing the street keeps us safe from cars. Imagine you are walking in Johannesburg with your grandmother. You should always hold her hand when crossing the street.
Example 3: Not talking to strangers keeps us safe from people we don't know. If someone you don't know offers you sweets, you should say "No, thank you" and tell an adult. Remember, following safety rules helps us avoid accidents and stay safe. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Name one feeling you have felt today. How did you show that feeling?
Solution: A learner might say "I felt happy today because I played with my friends. I showed I was happy by smiling and laughing." The key here is identifying a feeling and linking it to a behavioral expression.
Question 2: What is one way you can be a good friend to someone who is feeling sad?
Solution: "I can be a good friend by comforting them, listening to them, or sharing a toy with them to cheer them up." Emphasis should be on empathy and supportive actions.
Question 3: Why is it important to wash our hands? Name one time when we should wash our hands.
Solution: "It is important to wash our hands to get rid of germs that can make us sick. We should wash our hands before eating." This reinforces the link between hygiene and health.
Question 4: What should you do before you cross the street?
Solution: "I should look left, then right, and then left again to make sure no cars are coming." Focus on the specific actions needed for road safety.
Question 5: If you see someone feeling left out during a game, what can you do?
Solution: "I can invite them to join the game and make them feel welcome." This promotes inclusivity and positive social interaction.
