Overview: This lesson focuses on two of the most fundamental building blocks of a child's social and emotional development: understanding feelings and building positive friendships. For Grade R learners in South Africa, this is a critical time. Many are in a formal schooling environment for the first time, navigating a larger and more diverse group of peers. This lesson provides them with the essential language and skills to identify their own emotions and recognise them in others. It also provides a practical guide on how to be a kind, sharing, and supportive friend.
This section provides the core knowledge for the teacher to deliver the lesson. Use visual aids like large, clear pictures or puppets for each concept.
Concept 1: Our Big Feelings (Emotions) What are feelings? Feelings are what we feel on the inside of our bodies. They are like visitors – they come and go, and all of them are okay to have. Sometimes we feel happy, sometimes we feel sad, and that's normal. Our faces and our bodies often show others how we are feeling.
Happy (Ukujabula / Bly)
Explanation: This is the feeling you get when something good happens. It feels warm and light inside. Your face shows a big smile, your eyes might look bright, and you might want to jump or dance.
