This week, we're diving deeper into the wonderful world of numbers, specifically focusing on the numbers 0 to
5. Understanding these numbers is a crucial building block for all future math learning. Being able to count, compare, and represent these numbers helps us in everyday life, from sharing sweets with our friends to understanding how many fingers we have on one hand. In South Africa, we use these numbers constantly – to count our money when buying sweets at the spaza shop, to count the number of children playing in the park, and to understand how many helpers we need to collect water. It's all around us!
This week focuses on making sure learners truly understand what the numbers 0 through 5 mean. We want them to move beyond just reciting numbers and actually grasp the quantity each number represents.
Counting: Counting involves assigning a number name to each object in a set, one at a time. The last number you say tells you the total number of objects in the set. It's important to emphasize one-to-one correspondence: each object gets one and only one number name.
Example 1: Imagine we have 3 apples. We point to the first apple and say "one," then the second apple and say "two," and finally the third apple and say "three." This means we have three apples in total.
Example 2: Let’s use our fingers! Hold up one finger. That's ONE. Now add another finger. How many fingers are up? TW
O. Add another. How many now? THREE! Keep going to FIV
E. Representing Numbers: Numbers can be represented in many ways!
Concrete Objects: Using actual objects like stones, beads, sweets, or even fingers and toes.
Pictures: Drawing pictures of objects (circles, stars, smiley faces) to represent a number.
Symbols: Using the written numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and
5. Example 1 (Concrete): To represent the number 4, you could collect 4 small stones from the playground.
Example 2 (Pictures): To represent the number 2, you could draw two suns: 🌞🌞 Example 3 (Symbols): The symbol "3" represents the number of wheels on a tricycle.
Comparing Quantities: Comparing means deciding which group has more, less, or the same number of objects.
More than: Means a group has a larger quantity.
Less than: Means a group has a smaller quantity.
The same as: Means both groups have the same quantity.
Example 1: Let’s compare 2 oranges and 5 bananas. If we look at the groups, we see that 5 bananas is more than 2 oranges. So bananas are more!
Example 2: Let's compare 3 crayons and 1 pencil. 1 pencil is less than 3 crayons. So the pencils are less!
Example 3: If we have 4 building blocks in one pile and 4 building blocks in another pile, we say they have the same as each other.
Zero (0): It's very important to understand that zero represents nothing or none.
Example: If you had 2 sweets and you ate both of them, how many sweets do you have now? ZERO! Nothing! Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Count the number of circles below and write the number symbol next to it. ⚪️⚪️⚪️ Solution: There are three circles. The number symbol is
3. Commentary: This question reinforces counting and associating the quantity with the correct symbol.
Question 2: Draw 4 stars.
Solution: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Commentary: This question reinforces representing a number (4) using pictures.
Question 3: Which group has more?
Group A: 🍎🍎 Group B: 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎 Solution: Group B has more apples (5 is more than 2).
Commentary: This question reinforces the concept of "more than".
Question 4: Which group has less?
Group A: ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️ Group B: ⚽️⚽️ Solution: Group B has less soccer balls (2 is less than 4).
Commentary: This question reinforces the concept of "less than". Independent Practice (Questions Only)
Count the number of triangles: △△△△△. Write the number. Draw 2 hearts. Which group has the same number?
Group A: 🐱🐱🐱 Group B: 🐶🐶🐶 Which group has more?
Group A: 🌳🌳🌳 Group B: 🌳🌳 Which group has less?
Group A: 🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗 Group B: 🚗🚗🚗 If you have 5 fingers and you hide 2, how many fingers are showing? Draw the fingers showing. Represent the number 1 using objects you can find in the classroom. Write down what object you used. Represent the number 5 by drawing faces.
