This week's lesson focuses on revising and consolidating key concepts covered in Grade 7 Technology. Technology is crucial for problem-solving and innovation, enabling us to address challenges in our communities and build a better future for South Africa. Understanding technological principles allows us to design, create, and evaluate solutions that improve our lives. In a rapidly evolving world, technological literacy is no longer a luxury but a necessity for all South Africans. This week, we'll be revisiting structures, mechanisms, electrical circuits, and control, ensuring a solid foundation for future technology studies.
2.1 Structures: A structure is something that has a definite size and shape, which serves a definite purpose. Structures can be natural (like a tree or a mountain) or man-made (like a bridge or a building). We are interested in the man-made ones.
Types of Structures: Frame Structures: Made of separate parts joined together to support a load. Examples include bicycle frames, bridges, and buildings with steel skeletons.
Shell Structures: Made of a thin, curved material that encloses a space and supports a load by distributing the force throughout the structure. Examples include eggs, car bodies, and domes.
Solid Structures: Made of a solid piece of material that supports a load. Examples include a concrete wall, a wooden table leg, or a brick.
Stability and Load-Bearing: Stability refers to the structure's ability to resist forces that might cause it to topple or collapse. Load-bearing refers to the structure's ability to support weight or other forces applied to it. Frame structures rely on triangulation for stability. Shell structures gain strength from their shape. Solid structures need to be strong enough for the materials they are made of.
