This week, we delve deeper into the fascinating world of whole numbers and integers. Building on what you already know, we'll explore how to perform calculations involving all four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with both whole numbers and integers. Integers, remember, include negative numbers as well as positive numbers and zero. Understanding whole numbers and integers is crucial, not just for maths class, but for many real-life situations in South Africa. Think about managing your pocket money, calculating discounts at the shops, understanding temperatures (especially during our cold winters!), or even following sports scores.
2.1 Whole Numbers: Whole numbers are the basic counting numbers starting from zero: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. They do not include fractions or decimals. Mastering operations with whole numbers is fundamental.
Addition: Combining quantities. For example, 15 sheep + 8 sheep = 23 sheep.
Subtraction: Finding the difference between quantities. For example, 35 oranges - 12 oranges = 23 oranges.
Multiplication: Repeated addition. For example, 6 packets of chips each costing R5 is 6 x R5 = R
3
0. Division: Sharing equally. For example, sharing R100 equally between 5 friends is R100 ÷ 5 = R20 each.
