This week, we're diving into the practical world of time, temperature, and everyday measurements. Understanding these concepts is crucial because they affect our daily lives in countless ways, from planning our day around school times and baking koeksisters to understanding weather forecasts and measuring ingredients for a braai marinade. In South Africa, knowing how to manage time effectively and understand temperature is especially important for agricultural planning, predicting weather patterns for safety, and participating fully in everyday activities. Measuring correctly is essential in many South African trades and professions.
2.1 Time Conversion and Calculations Time is a continuous measurement of duration. We use different units to measure time, and it's important to know how to convert between them.
Seconds (s): The smallest unit we typically use.
Minutes (min): 1 minute = 60 seconds Hours (h): 1 hour = 60 minutes Days: 1 day = 24 hours Weeks: 1 week = 7 days Months: Approximately 30 days (but varies depending on the month)
Years: 1 year = 365 days (366 days in a leap year) Why is time conversion important? Think about planning a trip from Johannesburg to Durban. You need to know the distance (measurement), but also how long the trip will take (time).
Example 1: If a soccer match lasts for 90 minutes, how many hours and minutes is that?
Solution: 1 hour = 60 minutes 90 minutes / 60 minutes/hour = 1 hour and 30 minutes. So, a 90-minute soccer match is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Example 2: Sipho starts his homework at 4:30 PM and finishes at 6:15 P
M. How long did he spend on his homework?
Solution: From 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM is 1 hour.
From 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM is 45 minutes. Total time = 1 hour + 45 minutes = 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Example 3: A flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.
If the flight departs at 10:45 AM, what time will it arrive?
Solution: Departure time: 10:45 AM Flight duration: 2 hours 15 minutes Adding 2 hours to 10:45 AM gives us 12:45 P
M. Adding another 15 minutes gives us 1:00 P
M. The flight will arrive at 1:00 PM. 2.2 Temperature: Celsius and Fahrenheit Temperature measures how hot or cold something is. In South Africa, we primarily use the Celsius (°C) scale.
However, you might encounter Fahrenheit (°F), especially when looking at weather reports from other countries. Celsius (°C): Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. Comfortable room temperature is around 22-25°
C. A hot summer day in Durban might reach 35°
C. Fahrenheit (°F): Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F. While Grade 5 doesn't typically involve complex conversion formulas, understanding the approximate relationship is useful. For example, knowing that 30°C is approximately 86°
F. Example: The weather forecast says the temperature in Johannesburg will be 28°
C. Is that a hot day, a cold day, or a moderate day?
Solution: 28°C is a moderately warm day. It's comfortable for outdoor activities.
Importance in SA: Temperature plays a huge role in agriculture (knowing when to plant crops), predicting droughts and floods (impacting water resources), and simply knowing what to wear! 2.3 Everyday Measurement Problems: Length, Mass, Volume We use measurements every day.
Here's a reminder of common units: Length: Millimeter (mm): Very small distances Centimeter (cm): 1 cm = 10 mm Meter (m): 1 m = 100 cm Kilometer (km): 1 km = 1000 m Mass (Weight): Gram (g): Small amounts Kilogram (kg): 1 kg = 1000 g Volume (Capacity): Milliliter (ml): Small amounts of liquid Liter (L): 1 L = 1000 ml Example 1: Length You need to buy ribbon to decorate a birthday cake. The cake has a diameter of 30cm. Approximately how much ribbon (in cm) do you need to go around the cake once? (Circumference = πd, approximate π as 3)
Solution: Circumference = 3 30cm = 90cm You need approximately 90cm of ribbon.
Example 2: Mass A recipe for koeksisters requires 500g of flour. You only have 250g. How much more flour do you need?
Solution: Amount needed: 500g Amount you have: 250g Difference: 500g - 250g = 250g You need 250g more flour.
Example 3: Volume A juice bottle contains 2 liters of juice. You want to share it equally among 5 friends. How many milliliters of juice does each friend get?
Solution: Total juice: 2 L = 2000 ml Number of friends: 5 Juice per friend: 2000 ml / 5 = 400 ml Each friend gets 400 ml of juice. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: A movie starts at 7:15 PM and ends at 9:30 P
M. How long is the movie?
Solution: From 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM is 1 hour.
From 8:15 PM to 9:15 PM is another hour.
From 9:15 PM to 9:30 PM is 15 minutes.
Total time: 1 hour + 1 hour + 15 minutes = 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Answer: The movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes long.
Question 2: The temperature outside is 25°
C. Your mom says it will increase by 7°C by midday. What will the temperature be at midday?
Solution: Current temperature: 25°C Increase: 7°C Midday temperature: 25°C + 7°C = 32°C Answer: The temperature at midday will be 32°
C. Question 3: You need to buy 3 kg of potatoes for a family braai. The potatoes cost R12 per kilogram. How much will the potatoes cost in total?
Solution: Quantity: 3 kg Price per kg: R12 Total cost: 3 kg R12/kg = R36 Answer: The potatoes will cost R36 in total.
Question 4: You are making a smoothie. The recipe calls for 250ml of yogurt, 100ml of milk and 50ml of honey. What is the total volume of the smoothie in milliliters?
Solution: Yogurt: 250ml Milk: 100ml Honey: 50ml Total volume: 250ml + 100ml + 50ml = 400ml Answer: The total volume of the smoothie is 400ml.
