Lesson summary

This week, we are focusing on the essential life skill of healthy eating and active living. Understanding how to make healthy food choices and incorporate physical activity into our daily routines is crucial for our physical and mental well-being. In South Africa, where we face challenges like food insecurity and lifestyle diseases, learning about healthy habits from a young age is particularly important. It empowers us to make informed decisions about our health and contribute to a healthier community. This knowledge also helps us understand the impact of our choices on our bodies, helping us to grow strong and healthy, feel good, and have the energy to learn and play.

Lesson notes

What is Healthy Eating? Healthy eating means choosing a variety of foods from different food groups to get all the nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) our bodies need to grow, develop, and stay healthy. It's not about starving ourselves or only eating specific "diet" foods. It's about balance and making informed choices.

The Four Food Groups: Grains (Carbohydrates): These provide us with energy. Examples include bread, rice, maize (pap), oats, and sorghum. In South Africa, maize is a staple food. Choose whole grains whenever possible, as they contain more fibre. Think of brown bread instead of white bread, or pap made from whole maize meal.

Fruits and Vegetables: These are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Aim to eat a "rainbow" of colours – different colours mean different nutrients! Examples include oranges, apples, bananas, spinach (morogo), carrots, tomatoes, and cabbage. Many South African fruits and vegetables are seasonal and affordable.

Protein: Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues in our bodies. Examples include meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts. In South Africa, we have access to a variety of protein sources, including affordable options like beans and lentils.

Dairy (or Calcium-Rich Alternatives): Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese are important for strong bones and teeth. If you are lactose intolerant or don't consume dairy, calcium-fortified plant-based milks (soy, almond, etc.) are good alternatives. Why is a Balanced Diet Important? A balanced diet is like giving your body the right fuel to function properly.

It helps us: Grow strong and healthy bones and muscles. Have enough energy to play, learn, and work. Concentrate better in school. Fight off illnesses. Feel good about ourselves. What is Active Living? Active living means incorporating physical activity into our daily lives. This doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym. It can be anything that gets our bodies moving!

Examples of Physical Activities: Playing outside: running, jumping, skipping, playing soccer, netball, or cricket. Walking or cycling to school (if it is safe to do so).

Helping with chores around the house: sweeping, gardening. Dancing or participating in traditional South African dances. Playing traditional South African games like diketo or kgati.

Benefits of Regular Physical Activity: Stronger bones and muscles. Healthy weight. Improved mood and concentration. Better sleep. Reduced risk of diseases.

Example Scenario: Lebo likes to eat chips and sweets every day and doesn't like to play outside. She often feels tired and struggles to concentrate in class. This is because she is not getting enough nutrients from healthy foods and not getting enough physical activity. She needs to try to eat more fruits and vegetables and find an activity she enjoys, like dancing or playing netball with her friends. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Identify which food group each of the following foods belongs to: Apple, Chicken, Bread, Milk.

Solution: Apple: Fruits and Vegetables Chicken: Protein Bread: Grains (Carbohydrates)

Milk: Dairy

Commentary: This question tests the learner's ability to categorize foods into the correct food groups. Recognizing these categories is the foundation for making healthy choices.

Question 2: Give two reasons why it is important to eat fruits and vegetables.

Solution: Fruits and vegetables provide us with vitamins and minerals which are essential for growth and fighting off illnesses. They contain fibre, which helps with digestion and keeps our bodies healthy.

Commentary: This question assesses the learner's understanding of the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables.

Question 3: Suggest one physical activity that Thando can do after school to stay active.

Solution: Thando could play soccer with his friends in the park. Alternatively, Thando could help his parents in the garden.

Commentary: This question encourages learners to think about incorporating physical activity into their daily routine.

Question 4: Sipho only eats pap every day. Is this a balanced diet? Explain why or why not.

Solution: No, this is not a balanced diet. While pap provides carbohydrates for energy, it lacks essential vitamins, minerals, and protein that are important for growth and development. Sipho needs to include fruits, vegetables, and protein in his diet.

Commentary: This question challenges learners to apply their knowledge of food groups and a balanced diet to a real-life scenario. Independent Practice (Questions Only) List three different types of grains you can eat for breakfast. Name three fruits that are commonly found in South Africa. Explain the difference between white bread and whole-wheat bread in terms of nutritional value. Why is it important to drink milk or eat other dairy products? Design a healthy lunchbox for yourself. List the foods you would include and explain why you chose them.
