Performance objectives

Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on respect and responsibility, specifically in relation to caring for our belongings and our environment. This is critically important for Grade 5 learners in South Africa because it fosters a sense of ownership, promotes sustainable practices, and contributes to a cleaner, healthier, and more respectful community. When learners understand the value of their own possessions and the importance of a clean environment, they are more likely to take pride in their school, home, and community. This also translates into respecting the belongings and environment of others.

Lesson notes

What is Respect? Respect means showing consideration and appreciation for something or someone. When we respect our belongings, we treat them with care and avoid damaging them. When we respect the environment, we recognize its value and take steps to protect it. Respect involves acknowledging that resources are finite and should be used responsibly. What is Responsibility? Responsibility means being accountable for your actions and obligations. It means understanding that you have a role to play in maintaining a clean and healthy environment and in looking after your own possessions. Being responsible means taking initiative and not waiting for someone else to fix problems.

Caring for Personal Belongings: Clothing: Wash clothes regularly to keep them clean and prevent them from becoming damaged or worn out. Learn to sew a button or mend a small tear to extend the life of your clothes. Put away clean clothes neatly to prevent wrinkles and damage.

Example: Siyabonga notices a small hole in his school shirt. Instead of ignoring it, he asks his grandmother to help him sew it up. This shows responsibility and respect for his clothing.

School Books: Cover your textbooks to protect them from damage. Handle them carefully and avoid bending the pages. Store them in a safe place, like a backpack, when not in use. Return borrowed books on time.

Example: Aisha always covers her textbooks with plastic and avoids doodling on them. She understands that these books belong to the school and need to be kept in good condition for other learners to use in the future.

Toys: Store toys in designated containers or shelves to prevent them from getting lost or broken. Clean toys regularly to remove dirt and germs. Share toys with others respectfully.

Example: Thando and his friends have a box for storing their toys after playing. This helps them keep their toys organized and prevents them from getting damaged.

Caring for the Environment: Reducing Waste: Reduce the amount of waste you produce by using reusable containers and avoiding single-use plastics.

Example: Instead of buying juice in a disposable carton every day, Lindiwe uses a reusable water bottle that she fills with juice from a large container at home.

Reusing Materials: Find new ways to use items instead of throwing them away.

Example: Sipho's family uses old plastic bottles to make planters for their vegetable garden.

Recycling: Separate recyclable materials, such as paper, plastic, and glass, and dispose of them in designated recycling bins. Understand what materials are recyclable in your local municipality.

Example: The Grade 5 class at Thandeka Primary School has set up a recycling program. They collect paper, plastic, and glass from the classrooms and deliver them to a local recycling center.

Conserving Water: Use water wisely by turning off the tap when brushing your teeth and taking shorter showers.

Example: Zanele reminds her brother to turn off the tap while he is brushing his teeth to save water.

Conserving Electricity: Turn off lights and electronic devices when they are not in use.

Example: Musa turns off the lights when he leaves a room to save electricity.

Planting Trees: Trees help to clean the air and provide habitats for wildlife. Participate in tree-planting initiatives in your community.

Example: The learners at Nelson Mandela School participate in an annual tree-planting day to help green their school grounds.

Consequences of Neglect: Personal Belongings: Neglecting personal belongings leads to damage, loss, and the need to replace them more frequently, which can be costly.

Environment: Neglecting the environment leads to pollution, resource depletion, and harm to plants and animals. It can also contribute to climate change and other environmental problems that affect everyone. Littering pollutes our surroundings and can spread diseases. Lack of water conservation leads to water shortages, which can affect agriculture and access to clean drinking water. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
