Performance objectives

Lesson summary

This week, we're diving deeper into working with whole numbers and focusing on problem-solving using all four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Understanding how to perform these operations accurately and efficiently is absolutely vital for everyday life. Think about budgeting your pocket money at the tuck shop, calculating distances for a trip to Durban, or even helping your parents with grocery shopping and working out the change. Mastering these skills will give you confidence in dealing with numbers and help you succeed in future maths lessons.

Lesson notes

Understanding the Four Operations: Addition (+): Combining two or more numbers to find their total (sum). For example, if you have 15 marbles and your friend gives you 8 more, you add 15 + 8 to find the total number of marbles you have (23).

Subtraction (-): Finding the difference between two numbers. For example, if you had R50 and spent R28 on sweets, you subtract R28 from R50 to find out how much money you have left (R22).

Multiplication (x or ): Repeated addition of the same number. For example, if you buy 5 packets of chips and each packet costs R7, you multiply 5 x R7 to find the total cost (R35). We can think of this as adding R7 five times: R7 + R7 + R7 + R7 + R7 = R

5. Division (÷ or /): Splitting a number into equal groups. For example, if you have 36 sweets to share equally among 4 friends, you divide 36 ÷ 4 to find out how many sweets each friend gets (9 sweets each). The Importance of Order of Operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS): When a problem involves more than one operation, we need to follow a specific order to get the correct answer. We use the acronym BODMAS (Brackets, Order/Exponents, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) or PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction). Remember, Division and Multiplication are done from left to right, and Addition and Subtraction are done from left to right.
