Lesson summary

This week, we will focus on revising all the important topics we have learned in Life Skills this term. Think of it like getting ready for a big sports day or a concert; we need to practice all the skills we have learned so that we can feel confident and do our very best. This revision is important because Life Skills helps us make smart choices every day in our lives here in South Africa. It teaches us how to keep our bodies healthy and strong, how to stay safe in our homes and communities, and how to be good citizens who know their rights and responsibilities. By reviewing these topics, we will be well-prepared for our end-of-term assessment and, more importantly, prepared for life!

Lesson notes

This section is a summary of the most important ideas we have learned. Let's go through them one by one.

Topic 1: Healthy Eating What is it? Healthy eating means choosing to eat a variety of foods that give your body the nutrients it needs to grow, have energy, and fight off sickness. Why is it important? Just like a car needs the right fuel to run, our bodies need the right foods. Eating well helps you to concentrate in class, gives you energy to play with your friends, and builds strong bones and teeth. The Main Food Groups (with South African examples): Fruits and Vegetables: These give us vitamins to help us fight germs.

Examples: Apples, bananas, oranges, spinach (marogo), pumpkin, tomatoes, and onions.

Grains (Carbohydrates): These are our main energy-giving foods.

Examples: Maize meal (pap), bread, rice, potatoes, and samp.

Proteins: These help our bodies to build and repair muscles. They make us strong.

Examples: Chicken, fish, beef, eggs, beans, and lentils.

Dairy: These are rich in calcium, which is needed for strong bones and teeth.

Examples: Milk, yoghurt, cheese, and amasi (sour milk).

Healthy Fats and Oils: We only need a little of these for energy and a healthy brain.

Examples: Avocado, nuts, sunflower oil.

Worked example

Imagine you are packing your lunchbox for school. You need to choose one item from three different food groups.

A great healthy lunch could be:

A brown bread sandwich with chicken (Grains and Protein).

An apple (Fruit).

A small bottle of water (to stay hydrated).

This is a balanced meal because it gives you energy, strength, and vitamins.

Topic 2: Safety

What is it? Safety means protecting yourself from harm or danger.

Why is it important? Being aware of dangers helps us to avoid getting hurt at home, at school, and in our community.

Key Safety Rules:

Road Safety: South Africa's roads can be very busy.

We must always:

Find a safe place to cross.

Stop at the edge of the road.

Look right, look left, and look right again.

Listen for cars.

When the road is clear, walk quickly across. Do not run.

Obey traffic lights (robots) and traffic officers.

Safety at Home:

Never play with matches, lighters, or candles.

Do not touch electrical sockets or wires.

Do not open the door for strangers.

Know your emergency numbers (e.g., Police: 10111, Ambulance: 10177).

Safety with Medicines:

Only take medicine given to you by a trusted adult (like a parent or nurse).

Never take medicine that belongs to someone else.

Topic 3: Public Symbols
