This week, we become 'Data Detectives'! We will focus on Data Handling, which is a very important part of mathematics. Data Handling is the skill of collecting, sorting, organising, showing, and understanding information (or 'data'). In our everyday lives in South Africa, we see data everywhere. When we vote for a class captain, we are collecting data. When a spaza shop owner checks which sweets are selling the fastest, they are using data. When we look at a weather chart to see if we should wear a jersey, we are reading data. By learning how to handle data, we can make smarter choices and understand the world around us better. This week also focuses on exam preparation.
What is Data Handling? Data handling is a process with a few steps. Think of it like baking a cake. You need to follow the recipe step-by-step!
Step 1: Collect Data First, we need to gather information. This information is called data. We can collect data by asking questions, observing things, or doing surveys. A very useful tool for collecting data quickly is using tally marks. A tally mark is just a straight line (`|`). We make one line for each item we count. To make it easy to count, we group the tally marks in fives. 1 = `|` 2 = `||` 3 = `|||` 4 = `||||` 5 = `||||` (The fifth line crosses the other four. This makes it easy to count in fives!)
