Lesson summary

This week focuses on revising the Life Skills content covered throughout the term and preparing for the upcoming exam. Exam preparation isn't just about memorizing facts; it's about understanding how we can use what we've learned to make good choices, be responsible citizens, and live healthy and fulfilling lives in South Africa. This revision period will help you solidify your knowledge and develop effective study habits that will benefit you throughout your school career and beyond. In Life Skills, we learn about ourselves, our communities, and how to navigate the world around us. We will revisit key topics to ensure everyone feels confident and ready to show what they know.

Lesson notes

Let's review the main areas we’ve covered this term in Life Skills: Healthy Living: This includes taking care of our bodies and minds. Think about what we eat, how much we exercise, and how we keep ourselves clean.

Hygiene: Washing our hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet, helps prevent the spread of germs. In South Africa, where access to clean water can be a challenge in some areas, it's even more important to practice good hygiene.

Healthy Eating: A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein gives us the energy we need to learn and play. Think about the types of food you typically eat. Are there enough fruits and vegetables? For example, instead of always eating chips, try snacking on an apple or a carrot.

Exercise: Being active keeps our bodies strong and healthy. Play outside, dance, or participate in sports. Even walking to school is a good form of exercise.

Mental Wellbeing: Talking about your feelings with someone you trust is important. It's okay to feel sad, angry, or scared sometimes.

Safety Rules: Safety rules help us stay safe in different places.

Home: Keep dangerous objects out of reach of children. Always ask an adult before using appliances. Never play with matches or fire.

School: Follow the school rules. Walk, don't run, in the hallways. Be careful when using scissors or other sharp objects.

Community: Look both ways before crossing the street. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't talk to strangers. Never get into a car with someone you don't know.

Example: A child sees a broken electrical wire hanging low in their yard after a storm in a rural area.

The safety rule is: Do not touch the wire and immediately tell an adult.* Respecting Diversity: South Africa is a rainbow nation, meaning we have many different cultures, languages, and traditions. Respecting diversity means treating everyone with kindness and understanding, even if they are different from us. It means learning about and appreciating other cultures.

Example: Learning greetings in different South African languages (Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, etc.).

Understanding different customs: Some cultures have different ways of celebrating holidays or preparing food.

Relationships and Conflict Resolution: Knowing how to get along with others and solve problems peacefully is a crucial Life Skill.

Communication: Listen carefully to what others have to say. Express your own feelings in a clear and respectful way.

Empathy: Try to understand how others are feeling.

Conflict Resolution: When disagreements arise, try to find a solution that works for everyone. This could involve compromise or finding a common ground. Talking to a teacher or adult is important when conflicts escalate.

Example: Two children are arguing over a toy. They can resolve the conflict by taking turns playing with the toy or finding another toy that they both enjoy.

Study Skills: These are techniques that help you to learn effectively.

Create a study schedule: Allocate specific times for studying different subjects.

Find a quiet place to study: Minimize distractions.

Summarize information: Write down the key points in your own words.

Practice with past papers: This will help you get familiar with the exam format and types of questions.

Take breaks: Avoid studying for long periods without a break. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Nomsa wants to stay healthy. Name two things she should do every day.

Solution: Nomsa should wash her hands regularly with soap and water. She should also eat a healthy breakfast, including fruit or porridge.

Question 2: Sipho is walking home from school and a stranger offers him a ride. What should Sipho do?

Solution: Sipho should politely refuse the ride and continue walking home. He should never get into a car with someone he doesn't know. He could also let a trusted adult know about the incident.

Question 3: Thando and Aisha are arguing over who gets to use the skipping rope during break time. How can they solve this problem peacefully?

Solution: Thando and Aisha can take turns using the skipping rope. They could agree to use it for 10 minutes each. If they still can't agree, they can ask a teacher for help.

Question 4: List two study habits that will help you do well in your Life Skills exam.

Solution: Creating a study schedule and practicing with past exam papers are helpful study habits. Finding a quiet place is another helpful habit. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Why is it important to wash your hands regularly? Name three healthy foods you can eat for lunch. What should you do if you see someone being bullied at school? Why is it important to respect people who are different from you? What are the steps you can take to resolve a conflict with a friend? Develop a weekly study schedule for yourself. Give an example of a dangerous situation you might encounter at home and explain how to stay safe. Your friend is feeling sad. What can you do to help?
