This week, we dive into the exciting world of Measurement!
We will explore three important ideas: perimeter, area, and volume. These might sound like big words, but they are things we see and use every day in our homes and communities in South Africa. Perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of something, like putting a fence around a yard in Soweto to keep a dog safe, or the border around a beautiful Ndebele painting.
This section explains the core ideas for this week. We will use pictures and examples to make it easy to understand.
Perimeter: The Journey Around What is it? Perimeter is the total length of the border or boundary of a 2-D (flat) shape. Imagine a small ant walking along the very edge of a shape; the total distance it walks is the perimeter. How do we find it? In Grade 3, we find the perimeter by counting the number of units along the outside of a shape on grid paper. Each side of a small square is '1 unit'.
