This week, we're diving into the exciting world of healthy lifestyles and choices! Understanding how to take care of our bodies and minds is super important. In South Africa, we see lots of different foods and ways people live. Some are healthy, and some aren't so great. Learning about healthy choices helps us grow strong, do well in school, and have more energy to play and have fun with our friends and families. It also helps us avoid getting sick. Making good choices now will help us live longer and happier lives. This week's focus is on understanding what a balanced diet looks like, the importance of exercise, and the impact of hygiene on our overall well-being.
2. 1. What is a Healthy Lifestyle? A healthy lifestyle means making choices every day that help our bodies and minds stay strong and happy. It's like building a house – if you use strong materials, the house will last a long time! A healthy lifestyle includes eating good food, getting enough exercise, keeping ourselves clean, and getting enough sleep. 2.
2. Food Groups and a Balanced Diet Our bodies need different kinds of food to grow and work properly. These foods are grouped into different categories, like: Fruits and Vegetables: These are packed with vitamins and minerals that help us stay healthy and fight off sickness.
Examples: apples, bananas, oranges, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage. Think of an orange as a little sunshine ball full of goodness!
Grains and Starches: These give us energy to run, jump, and play! They include bread, rice, pap (maize porridge), potatoes, and pasta. Pap is a very common and important food in South Africa! It's a great source of energy.
Protein: Protein helps us build strong muscles and repair our bodies.
Examples: meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and nuts.
Dairy: Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt help us build strong bones and teeth because they have lots of calcium. A balanced diet means eating foods from all these groups every day. We don't need to eat huge amounts, but we need to make sure we get a little bit of everything. Imagine a rainbow – each color represents a different type of food we need!
Example: A balanced meal could be chicken (protein) with pap (grain) and a side of carrots (vegetable). Another balanced meal is fish (protein), rice (grain) and spinach (vegetable). 2.
3. The Importance of Exercise Exercise isn't just about running around! It's about moving our bodies in ways that make us stronger and healthier.
Exercise helps: Strengthen our muscles and bones: Makes us stronger so we can play and work without getting tired easily.
Keep our hearts healthy: Our hearts are like engines that keep us going! Exercise makes them stronger.
Improve our mood: Exercise releases chemicals in our brains that make us feel happy!
Help us sleep better: When we're tired from playing and moving, we sleep more soundly.
Examples: Running, jumping, playing soccer, swimming, dancing, or even just walking around the schoolyard during break time are all forms of exercise. Even helping with chores at home, like sweeping the floor or carrying groceries, is a type of exercise! 2.
4. Hygiene: Keeping Clean to Stay Healthy Hygiene is all about keeping ourselves clean to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. The most important part of hygiene is handwashing! Why is handwashing so important? Our hands touch everything, and they pick up germs from door handles, toys, other people, and even the food we eat. If we don't wash our hands, we can easily spread these germs to ourselves and others, causing illness. When should we wash our hands? Before eating After using the toilet After playing outside After touching animals After coughing or sneezing Whenever our hands look dirty How to wash your hands properly: Wet your hands with clean water. Apply soap. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds (sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice!). Make sure to scrub all surfaces of your hands, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Rinse your hands well under clean water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry. 2.
5. Healthy vs.
Unhealthy Choices Healthy Choices: These are actions that help us stay healthy and strong.
Examples include: Eating fruits and vegetables every day. Drinking water instead of sugary drinks like fizzy drinks. Playing outside and getting exercise. Washing our hands regularly. Getting enough sleep (about 9-11 hours for Grade 3 learners).
Unhealthy Choices: These are actions that can make us sick or weak.
Examples include: Eating too much junk food (like sweets, chips, and fizzy drinks). Not exercising enough. Not washing our hands. Not getting enough sleep. Spending too much time watching TV or playing video games instead of playing outside. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Sipho loves to eat chips and fizzy drinks every day. Is this a healthy choice? Why or why not?
Solution: No, this is not a healthy choice. Chips and fizzy drinks are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. Eating too much of these can lead to weight gain, tooth decay, and other health problems. Sipho should try to eat more fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods instead.
Question 2: Thandi plays soccer every day after school. How does this help her stay healthy?
Solution: Playing soccer is a great way for Thandi to exercise. Exercise helps her to build strong muscles and bones, keep her heart healthy, improve her mood, and help her sleep better. All these things contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Question 3: When should we wash our hands? Give two examples.
