Lesson summary

Patterns are everywhere! In our homes, our schools, and even in nature. Understanding patterns helps us to predict what comes next, make sense of the world around us, and even solve problems. Think about the stripes on a zebra, the bricks in a building, or the tiles on a floor – these all show patterns. Functions and relationships, in a simple way, are about how things are connected or related to each other through patterns. For example, if you buy sweets and each sweet costs R2, the total cost depends on how many sweets you buy. That's a relationship!

Lesson notes

What is a Pattern? A pattern is something that repeats in a predictable way. Patterns can be found in many things, including shapes, numbers, and colours. Understanding patterns allows us to make predictions and understand how things work.

Geometric Patterns: Geometric patterns are patterns made up of shapes. These patterns can repeat the same shape, change the size of the shape, change the colour of the shape, or even combine all three!

Repeating Pattern: A pattern that repeats the same shape in the same order.

Example: Circle, Square, Circle, Square, Circle...

Growing Pattern: A pattern where the shape changes, usually getting bigger each time.

Example: Small Triangle, Medium Triangle, Large Triangle...

Colour Pattern: A pattern based on the colour of the shapes.

Example: Red Star, Blue Star, Red Star, Blue Star...
