Lesson summary

This week, we will become data detectives! We will explore the exciting world of Data Handling, which is a special way of collecting, sorting, and showing information so that we can understand it easily. In South Africa, we are surrounded by information. Think about the different colours of taxis on the road, the most popular flavour of chips at the spaza shop, or the number of goals scored by Bafana Bafana. Data handling helps us make sense of all this information. This skill is very important because it helps us make smart choices. We will also revise some important work we have done this year, like adding, subtracting, and number patterns, to keep our maths minds strong!

Lesson notes

What is Data Handling? Data is just a fancy word for information. Data Handling means we are doing three things: Collecting Data: Gathering information. (e.g., asking friends what their favourite pet is).

Organising Data: Putting the information in a neat way so it's easy to read (e.g., using a chart).

Interpreting Data: Understanding what the information tells us (e.g., finding out that more friends like dogs than cats).

Step 1: Collecting Data with Tally Marks A very fast way to count things is by using tally marks. A tally mark is just a straight line ( | ). When we get to the fifth item, we draw a line across the first four. This makes a little 'gate' and helps us count in fives easily.

Like this: 1 = | 2 = || 3 = ||| 4 = |||| 5 = ||||
