Lesson summary

This week’s lesson is a special revision journey where we will look back at all the important Life Skills we have learned so far in Grade

2. We will bring together our knowledge about staying safe, being healthy, and taking care of our world. In South Africa, knowing these skills is very important for our daily lives. Whether we are walking to school or the spaza shop, choosing what to eat for lunch, or playing with our friends in the community, these skills help us make smart choices that keep us and others happy and safe. This lesson helps us remember and practise these skills so we can become confident, responsible, and caring young citizens of our beautiful country.

Lesson notes

A. Public Safety: Staying Safe on Our Roads Our roads can be busy places. To stay safe, we must follow rules. These rules are not to spoil our fun, but to protect our bodies from getting hurt.

The Golden Rule: Stop, Look, and Listen WHY? Cars, taxis, and buses move much faster than we can. We need to check carefully before we step into the road to make sure none are coming. HOW?

STOP: Always stop at the edge of the road (the kerb).

LOOK: Look to your right, then to your left, and then to your right again. Keep looking as you cross.

LISTEN: Listen for any cars you might not see. If the road is clear, walk straight across. Do not run.

Using a Zebra Crossing: A zebra crossing is a special place for pedestrians (people walking) to cross. It has white stripes, like a zebra! Drivers know they must stop for people waiting at a zebra crossing.

Understanding Traffic Lights (Robots): Red Man: STOP! Do not cross. It is not safe.

Green Man: GO! You can walk across the road, but you must still Stop, Look, and Listen first.

B. Health and Hygiene: A Strong Body is a Happy Body Making healthy choices helps us grow strong, have energy to play, and fight off sickness. Healthy vs.

Unhealthy Foods: Healthy Foods are 'grow' foods. They build our bodies and give us long-lasting energy.

Examples include: pap, fruit (like apples, bananas, oranges), vegetables (morogo, carrots, pumpkin), milk, brown bread, and lean meat (like chicken). Unhealthy Foods are 'sometimes' foods. They are often full of sugar and fat, which are not good for our bodies in large amounts. Too many can make us tired and sick.

Examples include: sweets, chips, fizzy drinks (like Coke), and vetkoek.

Example: For your school lunch, packing a sandwich with cheese, a banana, and a bottle of water is a healthy choice. Packing a packet of chips, a chocolate bar, and a sugary juice is an unhealthy choice.

Personal Hygiene: Keeping Clean WHY? Washing our hands removes tiny, invisible germs that can make us sick if they get into our mouths. HOW? We must wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice).

It is most important to wash our hands: Before we eat. After using the toilet. After playing outside. After coughing or sneezing.

C. Environmental and Social Responsibility: Caring for Our World We share our world with other people, animals, and plants. It is our job to take care of it.

Keeping our Environment Clean: Litter: Litter is rubbish that is left in the wrong place, like on the ground or in a river. It looks ugly and can harm animals.

The Rule: Always put your rubbish in a bin. If you cannot find a bin, hold onto your rubbish until you find one.

Recycling: This means sorting our rubbish so that some of it can be made into new things. We can sort paper, plastic, glass, and tins into different bins if our community has them.

Caring for Animals: Pets are part of our family. They depend on us.

We show care by giving them: Fresh, clean water every day. The right food. A safe and warm place to sleep. Love and gentle play.

Stranger Danger: A stranger is anyone you do not know. Most strangers are good people, but some are not. To stay safe, we follow the 'No, Go, Yell, Tell' rule if a stranger we don't know makes us feel unsafe, asks us to go somewhere, or tries to touch us. NO! Say 'NO!' in a loud voice. GO! Run away quickly to a safe place (like back to your teacher, your home, or a shop with people in it). YELL! Shout for help as you run. TELL! Tell a trusted adult (like a parent, teacher, or police officer) what happened immediately. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: The Traffic Light Puzzle A picture shows a traffic light for pedestrians (a 'robot' with the little man). The red man is lit up.

Question: Zola is waiting to cross the road and sees this light. What must she do and why? Solution and

Commentary: Answer: Zola must wait on the pavement and not cross the road.

Why: The red man means 'STOP'. It is not safe for people to walk across the road at this time because cars have the green light to drive. She must wait until the light changes to the green man before she thinks about crossing.

Question 2: Lunchbox Sorting Imagine you are packing a lunchbox.

You have these items in your kitchen: a fresh mango, a packet of NikNaks, a boiled egg, and a can of Fanta.

Question: Which two items are the healthiest choices for your lunchbox? Solution and

Commentary: Answer: The fresh mango and the boiled egg.

Why: The mango is a fruit full of vitamins that give us energy and help our bodies stay healthy. The boiled egg is a protein that helps to build strong muscles. The NikNaks are high in salt and fat, and the Fanta is very high in sugar, making them unhealthy choices for a school lunch.

Question 3: The Empty Juice Box Sipho has just finished his juice box while playing on the school field. The nearest bin is far away, near the classroom door.
