Data handling is all about collecting, organising, and representing information in a way that's easy to understand.
Think about it: when you and your friends decide which game to play, you’re actually collecting data! You’re asking each other what games you like. Then, you’re organizing that information to see which game is the most popular. Knowing how to handle data helps us make good decisions based on information we have. In South Africa, understanding data helps us understand things like which fruits are most popular in our school tuckshop, or what colours of cars we see most often on our streets.
What is Data? Data is just another word for information. It could be anything from your favourite colours to the number of pets each student in your class has.
Collecting Data: We can collect data by: Asking questions (Surveys): Asking people what they like, what they own, or what they prefer.
Observing: Watching and counting things. For example, counting the number of red cars that pass by the school in one hour.
Organizing Data: Once we have the data, we need to organize it so it makes sense.
We can use: Tally Marks: Little lines that we use to count. Four lines are grouped together and the fifth line crosses over them to make a group of five.
Tables: A way to organize data in rows and columns.
Representing Data: We can show data visually using: Pictograms: A graph that uses pictures to represent the data. Each picture represents a certain number of items.
Bar Graphs: A graph that uses bars of different heights to represent the data. The height of the bar tells us how many items there are.
Interpreting Data: Interpreting data means understanding what the graph or table is showing us.
We can ask questions like: Which item is the most popular? Which item is the least popular? How many people chose a specific item? What is the total number of items counted?
Example 1: Collecting and Organizing Data
The Grade 2 class at Thandeka Primary School wanted to find out which fruit was the most popular for snack time. They asked each student to choose their favourite fruit from these options: Apple, Banana, Orange.
Here are the results using tally marks:
