Overview This week, we dive into the exciting world of Data Handling, and we will also revise some important concepts we have learned so far this term. Data handling is all about being a 'data detective'! It is the process of collecting, sorting, and showing information (which we call 'data') so we can understand it better. This is a very important skill in everyday life in South Africa. Imagine a spaza shop owner in your neighbourhood; they use data handling to see which snacks are the most popular so they know what to buy more of. Or think about voting for a class captain; we collect votes (data) and count them to see who wins.
What is Data? Data is a collection of facts, like numbers, words, or measurements. For us in Grade 2, data is simply information. The number of learners in our class is data. The different colours of t-shirts our friends are wearing is data. Your favourite animals are data.
Step 1: Collecting Data with Tally Marks To be a good data detective, we first need a way to collect our information quickly and easily. We use tally marks. A tally mark is just a straight line ( | ) that we make to count something. When we get to the fifth one, we draw a line through the first four to make a group of
5. This makes counting much faster! | = 1 || = 2 ||| = 3 |||| = 4 |||| = 5 (four lines down, one across) |||| || = 7 (a group of 5 and 2 more)
