This lesson focuses on revising and consolidating the topics covered in Grade 2 Life Skills during Week
4. In South Africa, understanding health and safety is crucial for all children. This week, we're refreshing our knowledge of hygiene practices and safety rules. Learning about these topics will help us stay healthy, prevent illness, and keep ourselves and others safe at home, at school, and in our communities. Knowing these things helps us grow into responsible and healthy members of our South African community.
Hygiene Practices: Hygiene refers to the things we do to keep ourselves clean and healthy. Good hygiene helps prevent germs from spreading and causing illness.
Washing Hands: Washing hands regularly, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after playing outside, is very important. Use soap and water and wash for at least 20 seconds (about the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice). Germs live on our hands, and washing removes them. In South Africa, many communities face challenges with water access. Remind students to be mindful of water usage and not to waste water.
Example: Lerato plays soccer at school. Her hands are covered in dirt. She needs to wash her hands before eating her lunch to prevent getting sick.
Brushing Teeth: Brushing our teeth at least twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed – keeps our teeth and gums healthy. Tooth decay can lead to pain and difficulty eating, affecting our ability to learn and play. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride.
Example: Sipho eats a lot of sweets. He needs to brush his teeth regularly to prevent cavities.
Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering regularly helps remove dirt, sweat, and germs from our bodies. This keeps our skin healthy and prevents body odor.
Example: Zola plays outside in the hot sun. She sweats a lot. She needs to bathe or shower to clean her body.
Other Hygiene Practices: Keeping our hair clean, wearing clean clothes, and covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze are also important hygiene practices.
Example: When Thando coughs, she covers her mouth with her elbow to prevent spreading germs to her classmates.
Safety Rules at Home: Safety rules are guidelines that help us avoid accidents and injuries.
Never play with matches or lighters: Fire is dangerous and can cause serious burns and property damage.
Example: A child finds a box of matches and wants to light them. They should tell an adult immediately.
Never touch electrical outlets or wires: Electricity can shock us and cause serious injury.
Example: A child sees a loose wire hanging from the wall. They should not touch it and should tell an adult. Never take medicine without an adult's permission: Medicine can be harmful if taken incorrectly.
Example: A child finds a bottle of pills that looks like candy. They should not eat them and should tell an adult.
Be careful around hot stoves and ovens: These can burn us.
Example: When Mom is cooking dinner, the children should stay a safe distance away from the stove.
Do not run with scissors: Running with sharp objects is dangerous and can cause injuries.
Example: If a child needs to move scissors from one place to another, they should walk carefully.
Simple Emergency Situations: Minor Cut: Clean the cut with soap and water, apply a bandage, and tell an adult.
Example: A child gets a small cut while playing in the garden. They should wash the cut, put a bandage on it, and tell their teacher.
Calling for Help: Know how to call for help in an emergency (e.g., know your address and the emergency number – 10111). Emphasize that 10111 is for real emergencies only.
Respecting and Caring for Your Body: Eating healthy foods, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly are all ways to respect and care for our bodies. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Independent Practice (Questions Only) List three times during the day when you should wash your hands. Why is it important to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze? You are helping your mother bake a cake. What should you do to stay safe around the hot oven? You see a bottle of colorful pills on the table. What should you do? Your friend falls and scrapes their knee. What steps should you take to help them?
