This week, we begin our exciting journey as 'data detectives'! We will be learning about Data Handling. Data is simply information that we collect to help us answer questions. In our daily lives in South Africa, we are surrounded by data. For example, we might want to know which flavour of NikNaks is the most popular at the school tuck shop, or how many cars of different colours pass by our school gate. Learning to collect, sort, and show this information helps us understand our world better, make choices, and share what we have found with others. This topic builds on Grade 1 skills of sorting objects and lays the foundation for more complex graph work in later grades.
What is Data? Data is a collection of facts, like numbers, words, or pictures. When we ask a question like, "What is your favourite colour?", the answers we get (e.g., red, blue, green, red, blue, blue) are our data. We are data detectives, and the data is our clues!
Step 1: Collecting Data with Tally Marks To be good detectives, we need a fast way to count our clues. We use tally marks. A tally mark is just a straight line ( | ) that stands for 'one'. When we get to five, we do something special to make counting easier! 1 = | 2 = || 3 = ||| 4 = |||| 5 = |||| (We draw a line across the four to make a 'gate'. This group is easy to count as 5!) 6 = |||| | 10 = |||| ||||
