Introduction Fractions are a fundamental concept in mathematics that represent parts of a whole. For Grade 2 learners in South Africa, this topic is best introduced through practical, everyday experiences. The idea of "sharing fairly" is a concept they already understand. We see it when sharing a packet of NikNaks with a friend, cutting a birthday cake for the family, or dividing a loaf of bread. This lesson connects the mathematical terms 'half' and 'quarter' to this real-world act of equal sharing.

This section breaks down the core ideas of halves and quarters. It is essential to use physical objects (paper, playdough, apples) alongside these explanations. What is a Fraction? A fraction is a part of a whole. The most important word here is whole. A whole can be one thing, like one whole pizza, one whole apple, or one whole piece of paper. When we cut or divide the whole into equal parts, we are making fractions. If the parts are not equal, they are not fractions!

Example: This is a whole chocolate bar. Understanding Halves (1/2) What is a half? When you take one whole object and divide it into two equal parts, each part is called a half.

How: Imagine you have one vetkoek to share with your friend. To be fair, you must cut it so you both get the same size piece. You cut it into two equal parts.

Why: The word "half" tells us that the whole has been split into two.

We write a half as a fraction like this: 1/

2. The 2 at the bottom tells us how many equal pieces the whole is cut into (two). The 1 at the top tells us how many of those pieces we are talking about (one).
