This lesson introduces Grade 2 learners to the foundational concepts of multiplication and division. Instead of abstract rules, we will explore these operations as faster, more efficient ways of doing things we already know: adding and subtracting. Multiplication will be presented as 'repeated addition' (a quick way to add the same number multiple times), and division will be introduced as 'repeated subtraction' (a way to make equal groups or share things fairly). In the South African context, these skills are used daily.
What is Multiplication? (A Faster Way to Add) Imagine you are at a party and see 4 plates. On each plate, there are 2 pieces of chicken. How many pieces of chicken are there in total?
We can find the answer by adding: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 We added the number '2' four times. This is called repeated addition. Multiplication is a shortcut for repeated addition. Instead of writing out the long sum, we can say we have "4 groups of 2". In maths, we write this as: 4 × 2 = 8 The '×' symbol means 'groups of' or 'multiply'.
