Lesson summary

This week in Life Skills, we're focusing on games and movement patterns. Learning about these is important because it helps us to be healthy, strong, and have fun! Playing games and practicing movement patterns allows us to develop our bodies, work as a team, and learn important skills like following rules and being fair. Think about playing soccer with your friends in the township, or running races at school during sports day – all these activities involve specific movements and understanding how to play together. These skills are important not just for playing, but also for everyday activities like walking to school, helping with chores at home, and staying active throughout our lives.

Lesson notes

Locomotor Movement Patterns: These are movements that move your body from one place to another.

Walking: Moving forward using your legs, one foot in front of the other. Think about walking to the tuck shop during break time. Keep your head up, swing your arms, and take steady steps.

Running: Similar to walking, but faster. You lift your feet higher and move your arms more quickly. Imagine running to catch the bus home!

Hopping: Jumping on one foot and landing on the same foot. Like a bunny rabbit hopping in the garden! Try to keep your balance.

Skipping: A combination of a hop and a step, alternating legs. This takes practice and coordination.

Jumping: Pushing off the ground with both feet and landing on both feet. Think about jumping over a puddle after the rain.

Non-Locomotor Movement Patterns: These are movements that you do in one place, without travelling.

Bending: Lowering part of your body by bending at a joint (like your knees or waist).

Stretching: Reaching and extending your body parts to make them longer. Like stretching your arms up to reach the highest mango on the tree.

Twisting: Turning your body from side to side around your spine.

Swaying: Gently moving your body from side to side or back and forth.

Balancing: Maintaining your body's equilibrium, like standing on one leg.

Importance of Warm-Up: Warming up before any physical activity is very important. It prepares your muscles and joints for exercise and helps to prevent injuries. Why Warm-Up? Warming up increases blood flow to your muscles, making them more flexible and less likely to get strained or pulled.

Example Warm-Up: Start with some light jogging on the spot, arm circles, and stretching.

Group Games: Games played with two or more people, usually following specific rules. These games encourage teamwork, cooperation, and following instructions.

Example 1: "Simon Says" One person is Simon and gives instructions like "Simon says touch your toes." Everyone must follow the instruction only if Simon says it. If Simon doesn't say "Simon Says", and you follow the instruction, you're out.

Example 2: "Duck, Duck, Goose" Players sit in a circle, and one person walks around tapping each person on the head saying "Duck." Eventually, they tap someone and say "Goose!" The "Goose" must chase the tapper around the circle, trying to tag them before they sit down in the Goose's spot. Why is Physical Activity Important? Physical activity is vital for a healthy body and mind.

It helps us: Stay strong and healthy. Improve our coordination and balance. Have fun and socialize with friends. Improve our focus in class. Maintain a healthy weight.

Worked example

Scenario: You're asked to demonstrate a locomotor movement pattern.

Task: Show the teacher how to hop.

Solution: Stand on one foot, bend your knee slightly, and push off the ground, landing on the same foot. Repeat this several times, moving forward as you hop.

Commentary: This shows you understand how to perform the hopping movement.

Scenario: The class is about to play a game of "Red Light, Green Light".

Task: Explain the rules of the game to a new classmate.

Solution: "When I say 'Green Light,' you run towards me. When I say 'Red Light,' you must stop moving. If I see you moving when it's 'Red Light,' you have to go back to the starting line."

Commentary: This demonstrates understanding the rules of the game.

Scenario: You feel a slight pain in your leg before playing a game.

Task: Explain what you should do and why.

Solution: "I should tell the teacher or a responsible adult. I should also stretch my leg gently. Warming up helps prevent injuries."

Commentary: This shows you understand the importance of warming up and seeking help if needed.

Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Name two locomotor movement patterns you can perform. Explain briefly how to do each one.

Solution:

Running: Lift your feet high and move your arms quickly to propel yourself forward.

Walking: Move one foot in front of the other, swinging your arms for balance.

Commentary: This question tests your understanding of different locomotor movements. Make sure to include specific details.
