Introduction This week, we will explore the exciting world of Data Handling. In isiZulu, we can call this `ukuphathwa kwedatha`, which means looking after information. Data is just a fancy word for information that we collect. Every day, we are surrounded by information: the number of children in our class, the different colours of cars that drive past our school, or our favourite types of fruit.
This section breaks down the process of data handling into simple steps that we will practice all week.
Concept 1: Sorting (Ukuhlela - To Arrange) Sorting is the first step. When we have a big jumble of things, sorting helps us to make sense of it. We put all the things that are the same together in groups. We can sort by one rule at a time.
Sorting by Colour: Putting all the red blocks in one pile, all the blue blocks in another, and all the yellow blocks in a third pile.
Sorting by Shape: Putting all the circles together, all the squares together, and all the triangles together.
Sorting by Type: Putting all the toy cars in one box and all the dolls in another. Why do we sort? It helps us to count our groups easily and see how many of each type we have.
