This week, we will focus on data handling, which means collecting, organizing, and displaying information in a simple way. We'll also revise key math concepts we've learned so far this term. Understanding data handling is important because it helps us make sense of the world around us. For example, we can use data to see which fruits are the most popular in our class or which colours are most common in our school uniforms. Revising our previous lessons will help us become more confident mathematicians. Imagine you want to know which snack to bring to a picnic that most of your friends would like - you would need to collect data! These skills help you with decisions every day.
Data Handling: Data is information. Data handling is the process of collecting, organizing, and showing data in a way that is easy to understand. We will focus on using tally marks, tables, and simple pictograms.
Tally Marks: Tally marks are a quick way to count. Each mark represents one item. When we get to five, we draw a line across the first four: |||| |||| . So 1 is |, 2 is ||, 3 is |||, 4 is ||||, and 5 is |||| .
Tables: A table is a way to organize data in rows and columns. This makes it easier to read and compare information.
Pictograms: A pictogram uses pictures to represent data. Each picture represents a certain number of items. For example, one picture of an apple could represent one apple.
Example 1: Favorite Fruits Let’s ask our classmates what their favorite fruits are. The options are apples, bananas, and oranges.
Collecting Data: We go around the class and ask each student their favorite fruit. We use tally marks to record their answers.

Let's use one fruit picture for each vote.
Apples: 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎 Bananas: 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 Oranges: 🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊 Addition and Subtraction within 20: Remember our number bonds! Addition means putting together and subtraction means taking away. We can use counters, fingers, or number lines to help us.
Example 2: Addition: 8 + 5 = ? We can start with 8 counters and add 5 more. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,

8. So, 15 - 7 = 8. 2D Shapes: These are flat shapes. We have circles (round like the sun), squares (four equal sides and corners), triangles (three sides and corners), and rectangles (four sides and corners, but two pairs of sides are equal).
