Lesson summary

This week, we're revising and consolidating what we learned in Week 7 of our Grade 1 Life Skills lessons. In Week 7, the CAPS curriculum focuses on understanding and practicing healthy habits, particularly around hygiene and taking care of our bodies. This is incredibly important for all South African children because practicing good hygiene helps us stay healthy, avoid getting sick, and prevents the spread of germs in our classrooms, homes, and communities. By understanding how to keep ourselves clean and healthy, we can participate fully in school, play with our friends, and live happy, healthy lives!

Lesson notes

Hygiene: Hygiene means keeping our bodies clean to prevent germs and sickness. Germs are tiny living things that can make us ill if they get inside us. Good hygiene habits help us stay healthy and strong!

Washing Hands: This is one of the most important things we can do! We should wash our hands with soap and water: After using the toilet Before eating After playing outside After touching animals When our hands look dirty To wash our hands properly, we need to: Wet our hands with clean water. Put soap on our hands. Rub our hands together for at least 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice!). Make sure to rub between your fingers and under your nails. Rinse our hands well with clean water. Dry our hands with a clean towel or let them air dry.

Example: Imagine you just finished playing soccer with your friends at school. Your hands are covered in dirt. You should wash your hands before eating your lunch to prevent germs from getting into your food and making you sick.

Brushing Teeth: We should brush our teeth twice a day – once in the morning and once before going to bed. This helps remove food and germs that can cause tooth decay (holes in our teeth). To brush our teeth properly, we need to: Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on our toothbrush. Brush all sides of our teeth – the front, back, and top. Brush our tongue to remove germs. Spit out the toothpaste (don't swallow it!). Rinse our mouth with water.

Example: Your mom reminds you to brush your teeth every morning and night. If you don't, little sugar bugs will eat your teeth!

Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering helps us remove dirt and sweat from our bodies. We should bath or shower regularly, especially after playing sports or being outside in the heat.

Example: After a long day of playing in the sun, your body feels sticky and smelly. Taking a bath or shower will make you feel clean and fresh.

Kindness and Respect: Being kind and respectful means treating others the way we want to be treated. In South Africa, we have many different cultures and backgrounds, so it's especially important to be respectful of everyone.

Sharing: Sharing our toys, snacks, or crayons with others shows that we care about them.

Example: Your friend doesn't have a crayon to color with. You share one of yours so they can join in the fun.

Taking Turns: When playing games, it's important to take turns so everyone gets a chance to play and have fun.

Example: Playing skipping rope during break. Everyone takes turns holding the rope and jumping.

Listening: Listening carefully when someone is talking shows that we value what they have to say. It also helps us understand what they are saying.

Example: Your teacher is giving instructions for an activity. You listen carefully so you know what to do. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Sipho played soccer and his hands are dirty. What should he do before he eats his lunch?

Solution: Sipho should wash his hands with soap and water before he eats his lunch. This will remove the dirt and germs from his hands and prevent him from getting sick. The "before" is important. We don't want those germs going near our food!

Question 2: Nomusa's friend doesn't have a pencil to draw with. What is one kind thing Nomusa can do?

Solution: Nomusa can share one of her pencils with her friend. Sharing is a kind way to help others and show that you care. This is a demonstration of Ubuntu - "I am because you are".

Question 3: You and your friend are playing a game with building blocks. What is one important rule to follow?

Solution: It's important to take turns when playing with building blocks. This way, everyone gets a chance to build and have fun. This is fair and prevents arguments.

Question 4: When someone is talking, what should you do to show you are listening?

Solution: You should look at the person who is talking, stop what you are doing, and pay attention to what they are saying. This shows respect and helps you understand them better. We use our eyes and ears to be good listeners. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Name three things you can do to keep your body clean and healthy. Why is it important to brush your teeth twice a day? You are playing a game with your friends, and someone is not following the rules. What should you do? Your mom asks you to help her with the dishes. How can you show her respect? List three times during the day when it is especially important to wash your hands. What does it mean to be a kind friend? Give an example. Why is it important to listen to your teacher when she is giving instructions? How long should you wash your hands for to ensure you remove all the germs? If you and your friend both want to play with the same toy, how can you solve this problem fairly?
