Overview: This week, we dive into the exciting world of Data Handling, and also revise some of the important number work we have learned this term. Data Handling is a fancy term for being a 'data detective'. It is all about collecting information (data), organising it so it makes sense, and then showing it in a way that is easy to understand. For our Grade 1 learners in South Africa, this is a skill they use every day without even realising it! When they choose their favourite flavour of NikNaks at the spaza shop, they are dealing with data. When they separate their building blocks by colour, they are sorting data.
What is Data Handling? Data handling is a three-step process for Grade 1s: Ask a Question & Collect Information: We start with a question we want to answer. The answers we get are our 'data'.
Sort and Organise: We put our data into groups to make it neat and easy to count.
Show and Tell: We draw a picture or chart to show everyone what we found out.
Step 1: Collecting Data with Tally Marks A very clever way to count things as we collect information is by using tally marks. It's like keeping score in a game. For each item we count, we draw one straight line down: | When we get to the fifth item, we draw a line across the first four: |||| This makes it easy to count in groups of five!
