Lesson summary

This lesson is a revision and consolidation of the key concepts covered in the first four weeks of Grade 1 Life Skills. Revision is like being a detective and looking back at all the clues and amazing things we have already learned. It helps us to remember important information and build our confidence. For young South African learners, these foundational life skills are crucial for their personal development, safety, and well-being. This week, we will revisit our bodies, our senses, how to stay healthy, how to be safe at home and on the road, and our feelings.

Lesson notes

This section revisits the core knowledge from the beginning of the term. We will go through each topic with examples to make sure we remember everything.

Topic 1: Me and My Amazing Body Our body is our home, and it's important to know all its special parts and what they do.

Body Parts: We have many body parts that help us move, play, and learn.

Let's remember some of them: Head: Holds our amazing brain, which helps us think.

Eyes: We have two eyes to see the beautiful world, like the bright colours of the Protea flower or our friends' faces.

Ears: We have two ears to hear sounds, like the teacher's voice, music, or a hadeda flying by.

Nose: We use our nose to smell things, like delicious food cooking or rain on the ground.

Mouth: Our mouth helps us talk, sing, and taste yummy food like mangoes and biltong.

Arms and Hands: We use our arms and hands to wave, write, draw, and hug our family.

Legs and Feet: Our legs and feet help us to walk, run, and jump during playtime.

The Five Senses: Our senses are our body's superpowers that help us understand the world.

Sight (Eyes): Lets us see colours, shapes, and sizes.

Example:* You use your sense of sight to see that a robot (traffic light) is red, which means you must stop.

Hearing (Ears): Lets us hear loud and soft sounds.

Example:* You use your sense of hearing to listen for cars before you cross the road.

Smell (Nose): Lets us smell nice things (like flowers) and bad things (like rotten food).

Example:* You use your sense of smell to know that Mom is baking your favourite bread.

Taste (Mouth/Tongue): Lets us taste if food is sweet, sour, salty, or bitter.

Example:* You use your sense of taste to enjoy a sweet slice of watermelon on a hot day.

Touch (Hands/Skin): Lets us feel if something is hot, cold, soft, or hard.

Example:* You use your sense of touch to feel that the sand at the beach is warm and soft.

Topic 2: Healthy Habits for Healthy Kids Healthy habits keep our bodies strong and full of energy.

Healthy Eating: Food is fuel for our bodies. We need to eat the right kinds of food.

Everyday Foods: These are healthy foods we should eat every day. They include fruits (apples, bananas), vegetables (carrots, morogo), proteins (chicken, beans), and grains (pap, brown bread).

Sometimes Foods: These are treats that are not very healthy, like sweets, chips, and fizzy drinks. We should only have them sometimes, not every day. Why?* Healthy food gives us energy to play and learn. Unhealthy food can make us tired and sick if we eat too much.

Personal Hygiene: This means keeping our bodies clean to fight off germs.

Washing Hands: We must wash our hands with soap and water before eating, after playing outside, and after using the toilet. How?* Rub your hands with soap for as long as it takes to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice!

Brushing Teeth: We must brush our teeth in the morning and at night to prevent cavities and keep our smile bright.

Topic 3: Staying Safe Knowing how to be safe is a very important skill.

Road Safety: Many of us walk to school or play near roads. We must be careful.

The Golden Rule: Before you cross any road, you must: STOP, LOOK left, LOOK right, and LOOK left again. Then you LISTEN for cars. Only cross when it is safe. Always walk on the pavement (sidewalk) and hold a grown-up's hand.

Safety at Home: Home is a safe place, but there are still rules to follow. Never play with matches, lighters, or fire. Do not touch hot things like the stove, kettle, or pots. Never open the door for a stranger.

Topic 4: Our Feelings It's okay to have lots of different feelings. It's important to know what they are and to talk about them.

Happy: You might feel happy when you play with your friends or get a hug.

Sad: You might feel sad if you fall down or if someone is unkind to you.

Angry: You might feel angry if someone takes your toy without asking.

Scared: You might feel scared if there is a loud thunderstorm. It is always a good idea to talk to a trusted grown-up (like a parent, teacher or grandparent) about your feelings. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: The Senses Detective Look at the pictures below. Draw a line from the sense on the left to the picture that uses that sense the most.

Sense: An Eye (Sight)

An Ear (Hearing)

A Nose (Smell)

Picture: A. A picture of a ringing telephone.

B. A picture of a colourful rainbow.

C. A picture of a flower.

Solution 1: 1 -> B: The line should go from the Eye to the Rainbow.

Commentary: We use our sense of sight to see all the beautiful colours in a rainbow. 2 -> A: The line should go from the Ear to the Ringing Telephone.

Commentary: We use our sense of hearing to listen to the sound a telephone makes when it rings. 3 -> C: The line should go from the Nose to the Flower.

Commentary: We use our sense of smell to enjoy the lovely scent of a flower.

Question 2: Healthy Lunchbox Imagine you are packing your school lunchbox. Circle all the healthy 'Everyday Foods' you would pack.
