Lesson summary

This week, we will be focusing on Data Handling and revising key concepts from the previous weeks. Data handling is all about collecting information, organizing it, and then making sense of it. It's like being a detective who gathers clues and figures out what's happening! In South Africa, we use data every day – from knowing which fruits are the most popular at the local market to understanding how many children are in each class. Learning about data handling helps us understand the world around us better and make informed decisions. We will also revise number recognition, counting, and basic shapes.

Lesson notes

2.1 Data Handling: Gathering and Representing Information Data handling is all about collecting information (data), organizing it so it's easy to understand, and then showing it in a way that makes sense. We'll be using tally marks and pictograms to help us do this.

Tally Marks: Tally marks are a quick way to count. We draw a line for each item we count. When we get to five, we draw a line across the four lines to make a group of five. This makes it easier to count larger numbers.

For example: |||| |||| |||| || represents 12 Pictograms: A pictogram uses pictures to represent data. Each picture stands for one item. It's a fun and easy way to compare different things.

Example: Imagine we asked our friends what their favorite fruit is. Here's how we can show the results in a pictogram: | Fruit | Number of votes | Pictogram | |-----------|-----------------|---------------------| | Apple | 4 | 🍎 🍎 🍎 🍎 | | Banana | 5 | 🍌 🍌 🍌 🍌 🍌 | | Orange | 3 | 🍊 🍊 🍊 | In this pictogram, each fruit picture represents one vote. We can easily see that bananas are the most popular because they have the most pictures. 2.2 Number Recognition and Counting Number Recognition: Being able to see a number and know what it is. For example, knowing that the symbol "5" represents five objects.

Counting: Being able to say the numbers in the correct order to find out how many of something there are. We count forwards (1, 2, 3, 4…) and backwards (10, 9, 8, 7…). We can use our fingers, objects, or even just our minds to count.

Example: Let's count these mangoes: 🥭 🥭 🥭 🥭 🥭 We count "One, two, three, four, five." There are five mangoes. 2.3 Shapes Circle: Round like a soccer ball or the sun.

Square: Has four sides that are all the same length, and four corners. Like a window frame (sometimes!).

Triangle: Has three sides and three corners. Like a slice of watermelon.

Rectangle: Has four sides and four corners, but two sides are longer than the other two. Like a door.

Example: Draw each shape: Circle: ⚪ Square: 🟥 Triangle: 🔺 Rectangle: 🟫 Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: We asked 10 children which pet they liked the best. 4 liked dogs, 3 liked cats, and 3 liked birds. Draw a tally chart to show this data.

Solution: | Pet | Tally Marks | |---------|-------------| | Dog | |||| | | Cat | ||| | | Bird | ||| | Explanation: We put a tally mark for each child's choice. Remember to group every five tally marks together.

Question 2: Use the tally chart from Question 1 to create a pictogram. Use a simple symbol like a star ⭐ for each pet.

Solution: | Pet | Pictogram | |---------|------------------| | Dog | ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ | | Cat | ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ | | Bird | ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ | Explanation: Each star represents one vote for the pet. This makes it easy to compare the number of votes for each pet.

Question 3: Look at the following shapes. How many circles are there? ⚪ 🟥 🔺 ⚪ 🟫 ⚪ 🔺 🟥 Solution: There are 3 circles.

Explanation: We carefully looked at each shape and counted only the circles.

Question 4: Count backwards from 15 to

0. Write the numbers down.

Solution: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10 Explanation: We start at 15 and subtract 1 each time until we reach

0. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Ask 8 friends what their favorite colour is (red, blue, or green). Create a tally chart to show your results. Using your tally chart from question 1, draw a pictogram using a smiling face 😊 to represent each vote. Looking at your pictogram, which colour was the most popular? Which colour was the least popular?

Draw the following shapes: one square, two triangles, and one rectangle. Count forwards from 7 to

4. Write the numbers down. There are 6 apples in a basket. You take away

2. How many apples are left? Draw a line of 4 squares. Then, draw a circle next to each square. How many circles did you draw? Count backwards from 20 to

3. Write the numbers down. You have 3 sweets and your friend gives you 5 more. How many sweets do you have now? Draw a shape that has 3 sides. What is the name of this shape?
