Lesson summary

This week, we are revising and consolidating what we learned in Life Skills in Week

3. We will be focusing on understanding and practising good hygiene habits to keep ourselves healthy and happy. This is especially important in South Africa, where access to clean water and proper sanitation can sometimes be a challenge. Knowing how to stay clean and healthy helps us protect ourselves from germs and illnesses, allowing us to enjoy school, play with our friends, and participate in community activities. We want to make sure everyone understands how to be a Health Hero!

Lesson notes

What is Hygiene? Hygiene means keeping ourselves clean. This helps us stay healthy and prevents germs from spreading. Germs are tiny little bugs that can make us sick. We can't see them, but they are everywhere! Good hygiene habits are our superhero powers to fight these germs.

Good Hygiene Habits: Washing Hands: Washing our hands is the most important way to stop germs from spreading.

We should wash our hands: Before eating. After using the toilet. After playing outside. After touching animals. When our hands look dirty.

How to wash your hands properly: Wet your hands with clean water. Put soap on your hands. Rub your hands together to make bubbles. Make sure to scrub all parts of your hands: the front, the back, between your fingers, and under your nails. Sing "Happy Birthday" two times while you are scrubbing. This makes sure you wash for long enough! Rinse your hands with clean water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry.

Example: Imagine you are helping your mom prepare pap for dinner. Before you touch the maize meal, you need to wash your hands to make sure you don't get any germs into the food.

Brushing Teeth: Brushing our teeth helps to remove food and germs that can cause cavities (holes) in our teeth. Cavities can hurt! We should brush our teeth at least twice a day: In the morning after breakfast. At night before going to bed.

How to brush your teeth properly: Put toothpaste on your toothbrush.

Brush all parts of your teeth: the front, the back, and the top. Brush gently so you don't hurt your gums. Brush for about two minutes. Spit out the toothpaste (don't swallow it!). Rinse your mouth with water.

Example: After enjoying some delicious biltong as a snack, it's important to brush your teeth to remove any bits of meat that might be stuck and prevent tooth decay.

Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering helps remove dirt and sweat from our bodies. We should bath or shower regularly, especially after playing sports or getting sweaty.

Example: After a long day playing soccer in the dusty streets, it is essential to take a bath or shower to remove all the dirt and germs.

Wearing Clean Clothes: Wearing clean clothes helps prevent the spread of germs and makes us feel good about ourselves.

Example: Imagine spilling some mango juice on your shirt. You should change into a clean shirt as soon as possible to prevent the juice from attracting germs and smelling bad.

Keeping Our Nails Clean: Keeping our nails clean prevents dirt and germs from getting trapped under our nails and spreading when we touch things or eat. We should trim our nails regularly. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
